We love this hotel location. The ocean view from the specious balcony. Good place to see the sunrise, quiet, not a lot of people at the beach. There is plenty of space. This out 2nd trip to Villas de Rosa. We love it here. We brought our sons and their spouses this time and they fell in love with this place too. Excellent service, breathtaking views, fantastic snorkeling, and a short car ride to many adventures.
Planning your trip to Akumal
When to go
December to March gives you the best mix: dry days, clear water, little sargassum and cool nights. It is also the priciest and busiest window, spiking over Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. With only eleven hotels in the village, those dates sell out months ahead, so book before you commit to flights.
April to August brings humid heat and sargassum. It swings wildly: some mornings the bay is spotless, others there is a brown band along the shore and a smell to match. Half Moon Bay and the Yal-Kú lagoon sometimes escape it, but nobody can promise that. Hotels rake their own stretch; the sea does as it pleases.
September and October sit at the heart of hurricane season: heavy rain, some businesses shut for weeks, and the cheapest rates of the year. If you go then, take a cancellable rate and watch the forecast. November is the quietly well-balanced month most people overlook.
Turtles feed in the bay all year, so there is no wrong season for that. Nesting runs May to October, when you will see marked nests on the sand and, with luck and from a distance, a female coming ashore at night.
Getting there and around
From Cancún airport it is roughly 105 kilometres down Highway 307, an hour and fifteen to an hour and a half depending on traffic around Playa del Carmen. From Tulum airport it is about 40 kilometres and under an hour. A private transfer from Cancún runs somewhere around MX$1,800-2,500; from Tulum, considerably less.
Public transport works fine here. ADO buses on the Cancún-Playa-Tulum route and the white colectivo vans stop at the Akumal junction on the highway, roughly MX$50-70 from Playa or Tulum. From the junction it is under a kilometre on foot to the bay, passing under the arch. With heavy bags in the heat, take the short taxi waiting there.
A car buys you the cenotes, Xel-Há and Tulum on your own schedule. The trade-offs are limited paid parking near the bay and the standing advice to leave nothing visible in the vehicle. Speed bumps and U-turn lanes on the 307 force slow driving; at night, in rain, slower still.
Without a car, Akumal is entirely walkable: fifteen to twenty-five minutes from Half Moon Bay to the main beach. Local taxis are expensive and run on fixed fares — Akumal to Tulum lands around MX$600-800. Uber does not work reliably on this stretch. A bicycle solves almost everything.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Akumal Bay, the village core, suits anyone who wants everything on foot: small hotels on the sand, restaurants, a dive shop and the turtle tours starting a few steps away. The price is daytime noise and a steady flow of visitors from nine to three. After four, the bay hands itself back to the people staying there.
Half Moon Bay, to the north, is condos and small hotels along a rocky shore with ladders into the water. No sand to sprawl on, but the snorkelling starts at your door and the mood is neighbourly rather than resort-like. Many units have kitchens, which changes the budget noticeably. The Yal-Kú lagoon sits at the far end.
Akumal Pueblo, west of Highway 307, holds the cheaper rooms and is where our US$109 floor makes sense. There is no beach: twenty to twenty-five minutes on foot to the sea, or a short taxi. In exchange you eat well for little and see how the place actually works.
South Akumal and Aventuras Akumal are residential, silent and effectively car-only. Along the highway sit the big all-inclusives: comfortable if a resort is what you want, though you will barely set foot in the village. With a median of about US$232 in our scans, this is not backpacker territory — worth knowing before you book.
Eating and going out
Beachfront restaurants trade in fish, ceviche and cocktails, with menus priced for dollars. Budget roughly MX$400-700 per person with a drink, tip on top; the view is what you are paying for, and the cooking does not always match it. In high season, book or arrive early, because tables facing the water disappear fast.
Cross the highway into the pueblo and the picture changes: taquerías, small kitchens and set lunches. Tacos at MX$20-35, a comida corrida between MX$130 and MX$180. It is worth the walk even if you are sleeping on the bay, and it is where you will eat best for the least money anywhere nearby.
If you rent a condo with a kitchen, stock up in Playa del Carmen or Tulum before you settle in. Akumal minimarkets carry a short, convenience-priced selection. Drink bottled or jug water, and expect ice and beer to climb in price the closer you get to the sand.
Nightlife is close to nonexistent, and that is part of the bargain. Two or three beach bars that close early, and little else. For a proper night out you have Tulum half an hour away by car, factoring in the taxi home, which does not get cheaper after midnight.
Booking well
The inventory is tiny: our 2026 scans found eleven hotels in Akumal with a real published price. December to April fills up, and Christmas and New Year go months in advance. If your dates are fixed, lock the room first and buy the flights afterwards, not the other way round.
Always check the exact location. Plenty of properties marketed as Akumal sit on Highway 307, kilometres from the bay with no sensible way to walk in. Ask how many metres to the water, whether beach access is public or through a club with a minimum spend, and whether the hotel has its own stretch of sand.
For the same money as a hotel at around US$232, a condo with a kitchen usually buys more space and better value on stays of four nights or more. In return you get minimal service, a security deposit and sometimes a separate cleaning fee. Confirm the air conditioning and what happens during a power cut.
Read the fine print: make sure the rate includes VAT and lodging tax, which often surface only at checkout. Several small businesses add 3-5% for card payments, so carry cash. In September and October, pay only for cancellable rates. And accept it plainly: no hotel refunds you because of sargassum.
