We had a fantastic stay at the Bacalari hotel, the hotel itself is beautiful and clean. Staff are extremely friendly, attentive and spoke excellent English. They organised a boat trip on the lagoon for us which was such a good trip. The area itself felt safe at night and there’s parking right outside. The hotel is about a 10/15 walk to the central point where there are plenty of lovely restaurants and shops. There is a boardwalk a 2 minute walk from the hotel which leads to the lagoon which is beautiful and great for swimming and sunbathing (or just to enjoy the view). The only negative I coul…

Planning your trip to Bacalar
When to go
The dependable window runs from late November into April: little rain, steady sun and the lagoon doing what it is famous for. The colour is a trick of light, and under cloud the seven shades simply do not show up. It is also the expensive stretch — December-January and Holy Week are the peaks, and a small town fills to its edges.
Between November and February the nortes blow in: two or three days of wind, grey sky and churned water that flattens the turquoise. They will not spoil a week here, but they can spoil a two-night escape. If you are coming briefly in winter, read the wind forecast as carefully as the rain forecast.
April to June turns properly hot — mid-thirties with humidity, though there is always somewhere to jump in. July and August add afternoon storms and Mexican school holidays. September to mid-November is the cheap, wet end: hurricane season, mosquitoes at dusk, and a real chance that a hard storm leaves the lagoon brown for several days.
One factor outweighs the month: the day of the week. Midweek the water is glassy; at weekends day-trippers arrive from Chetumal and across the peninsula and boat wake multiplies. Whatever the season, early morning is when the surface is stillest and the colour at its cleanest — plan your swimming accordingly.
Getting there and around
Chetumal is the natural airport: 40-50 minutes up the federal highway, a taxi in the order of MX$500-700, or a cheaper hop by colectivo or ADO from the Chetumal bus station for roughly MX$60-100. Flights are few and mostly connect through Mexico City, so price the long approach from Cancún before you commit.
From Cancún it is 4.5-5 hours on ADO for something like MX$400-600, with departures through the day; from Tulum, about three. The Tren Maya stops at Bacalar, but the station sits 15-20 minutes outside town and you will need a taxi on arrival — check current timetables, they are still being adjusted.
In town you walk: fort, plaza and the Costera are only a few blocks apart, though the climb back up from the water is felt and some stretches go unlit after dark. Mototaxis handle any local trip for MX$30-60. Do not count on ride-hailing apps here; use a sitio taxi or have your hotel call one.
A car only earns its keep if you intend to range: Cenote Azul and Los Rápidos to the south, Xul-Há, the ruins at Kohunlich and Dzibanché, Mahahual a good ninety minutes off. For everything else, a rented kayak will do more for your day than a vehicle parked in the sun.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Costera avenue, south of the fort, is the lagoon address: small hotels with their own dock, hammocks over the water and a ladder for the dawn swim. That is where the typical rate of about US$114 lives, and where it climbs from. The catch is that the avenue is long and strung out — from the far stretches, dinner in the centre means a mototaxi.
The centre — San Felipe fort, the plaza and the surrounding streets — is the sensible play: guesthouses and hostels from around US$27, restaurants on foot, and the lagoon five to ten minutes downhill. Pay for a swimming spot or a day pass and you swim just the same. What you lose is stepping from your room into the water.
Along federal highway 307 sit the lowest rates and the most predictable rooms: useful if you arrive late by car or if price rules, but the truck noise is real and you are outside the town. To the south, Xul-Há and the road toward Los Rápidos offer quieter, slightly cheaper shorelines, with a car effectively mandatory.
By profile: first visit and a short trip, the Costera with a dock — that is what you came for; tight budget or a long stay, the centre; families, a place with shallow shaded shoreline rather than a high dock and a view; anyone chasing total silence, the southern shore, accepting that you dine where you sleep.
Eating and going out
The scene is small and concentrated: around the plaza and the centre streets you get Yucatecan and Caribbean cooking — fish, panuchos, salbutes, sopa de lima — with mains in the order of MX$120-200 at 2025 prices. The evening stalls on the square, marquesitas and antojitos, cost a fraction of that and make a fine midweek dinner.
On the waterfront you pay for the view: restaurants and lagoon clubs with mains around MX$250-400 and, in several, a minimum spend or a day pass of MX$150-300 to use the dock and loungers. It is a perfectly legitimate way to get lagoon time if you are sleeping in the centre.
Nights are short and calm: a handful of bars with live music, terraces that close early, and not much beyond that. Bacalar is not a party town, and much of its appeal comes from exactly that. Anyone wanting noise finds it in Chetumal or back up on the Riviera.
Bring cash. There are ATMs, but few, they charge a fee, and they run dry over long weekends; plenty of kitchens, mototaxis and kayak rentals take no cards. Withdraw in Chetumal or Cancún before you arrive, and set aside your checkout money on day one rather than the morning of.
Booking well
Our 2026 scans found 34 hotels with a real price in Bacalar: from US$27, with a typical rate of about US$114. There are few of them and most are tiny — eight, twelve, twenty rooms — so inventory genuinely runs out. For December-January, Holy Week and Mexican long weekends, book weeks ahead; the rest of the year, one or two usually does it.
Check three things before you pay: that 'lagoon view' includes access and a dock rather than a distant panorama; that the room has air conditioning and insect screens, not just a fan; and how far you actually are from the centre on foot, because the Costera is long and the walk back is dark.
In September and October favour cancellable rates: hurricane season rarely wrecks a stay, but a storm can turn the lagoon brown or shut down water activities for days, and that flexibility is worth the few dollars. In the dry heart of winter, a cheap non-refundable rate is a reasonable bet.
