We had to rent this "hotel" for one night because the other host cancelled our reservation two days before our arrival. We had two rooms (two couples) close to reception. First of all, no English, no willingness to communicate, and forcing us to pay more then in the booking reservation (1280 MXN, booking was 1080 MXN). Rooms have window on the corridor. There are no working gravity ventilation. Small window in the bathroom, on the corridor too. Humidity and gross smell everywhere, including mold. So you have to choose - leaving open window on the corridor to have a little fresher air than in…
The pool shown in the picture belongs to the establishment next door, and we were not allowed to use it. There was loud booming music all night from the venue with the pool. The booming music continued until 5 in the morning. The front desk doesn't have a phone to call a taxi so we had to go down the road and across the street to the OXXO to hail a taxi to the bus barn at 5 in the morning.
Planning your trip to Campeche
When to go
November to February is the good window: days of 28-32°C, humidity you can live with, and long evenings on the seafront. It is also high season, with firm prices through December and January. The trade-off is the nortes — windy spells that grey the sky for two or three days and throw spray over the coastal avenue.
March to May the thermometer climbs. April and May are the hard months: well over 36°C with coastal humidity, and the stone of the old town still radiating heat late in the afternoon. You walk early, eat slowly and retreat by three. Without a pool or serious air conditioning it becomes a grind.
June to October is the rainy half: short, heavy afternoon downpours that cool little. September and October are wettest and overlap the tropical-storm season. They are also when our scans found the lowest rates in town, so the bargain is straightforward — pay less, carry an umbrella.
Dates that fill the city: the February Carnaval, one of Mexico's oldest, Holy Week, July and August with domestic travellers, the San Román fair in September, and the year-end holidays. In those weeks the shortage of rooms matters more than the weather does.
Getting there and around
The bus is still the normal way in. The first-class terminal sits on Avenida Patricio Trueba, about fifteen minutes by taxi from the centre. Mérida is two and a half to three hours on the short inland route; Villahermosa runs around six, Palenque slightly less, and Cancún is an overnight haul.
The Maya Train calls at Campeche, but with only a handful of departures a day, timetables that have shifted more than once, and a station outside the historic centre. It works for the Mérida leg if the hour suits you; it is not yet a replacement for the bus. Check schedules in the month you travel.
Alberto Acuña Ongay airport is about five kilometres out, small, and mostly serves Mexico City. Plenty of visitors fly into Mérida and continue overland instead. A taxi from the terminal into town runs a couple of hundred pesos; there is no public transport designed for arriving passengers.
Inside the walls you need nothing at all: the core is eight flat blocks you can cross on foot in twenty minutes. Short taxi hops cost roughly MX$40-60 and ride-hailing coverage is patchy. City buses are about MX$12. Rent a car only if Edzná or the wider state is on your list.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Intramuros is the obvious choice. Around the Parque Principal, the cathedral and Calles 10, 55 and 59 you find the mansions converted into hotels: courtyards, tilework, pools the size of a patio, and a location that saves you taxi fares. Ask for an exterior room — these houses hide windowless interior ones.
The barrios outside the gates are the value play. San Román, Guadalupe and Santa Ana are ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the Puerta de Tierra, with cheaper guesthouses and small hotels and genuine street life. San Francisco, beside the market, is noisier by day and more practical than it first looks.
Along Avenida Resurgimiento and the seafront sit the larger hotels: parking, a real pool, sea views. They suit drivers and work trips, but dinner in the centre means a short taxi every night. And remember the water out front is for looking at, not swimming in.
Towards Lerma and Playa Bonita, or along the airport road, you sleep cheaply and quietly but away from everything — worth it only with a car and a specific reason. On numbers: our 2026 scans start at US$47, almost always outside the walls, with a typical from-price of around US$89.
Eating and going out
Campechano cooking earns the trip: pan de cazón, coconut shrimp, pámpano in escabeche, chocolomo at festival time, and street sweets. For a cheap breakfast head to the Pedro Sáinz de Baranda market; for fish, the kitchens along the seafront and out in Lerma are more honest than several tables in the centre.
Calle 59, pedestrianised in stretches, gathers the terraces and is where your first evening will end: pleasant, priced for visitors. Stalls appear around the Parque Principal in the late afternoon, with music at weekends. A set lunch runs about MX$120-150; a seafood main lands somewhere between MX$200 and MX$300.
Nights are short, and that deserves saying plainly. Sunday to Wednesday the centre shuts early and you are down to two or three bars. Friday and Saturday bring more movement, a light-and-sound show at the Puerta de Tierra on certain evenings, and families strolling the seafront until late.
That seafront — kilometres of pavement facing the Gulf — is the best free plan in town at sunset: runners, cyclists, food carts, an unbroken horizon. It is not a beach. Real sand means driving towards Sabancuy or Isla Aguada, and that is hours away, not minutes.
Booking well
The number that matters here is not the price but the size of the market: we scanned 20 hotels with a real rate. Come Carnaval, Holy Week or the year-end holidays, the good ones sell out and what remains gets dearer. Book three to four weeks ahead for those dates.

Before you pay, check three things: that the air conditioning is in the room rather than the corridor, whether the window faces Calle 59 (music runs late at weekends), and whether there is parking, which is close to nonexistent inside the walls. Old houses have thick walls and thin floors.
Two nights cover the walled city; three if you add Edzná, an hour's drive away. Calakmul is a separate trip, not a morning excursion. Carry cash for the market and taxis. Campeche is among the calmest state capitals in Mexico — normal precautions, nothing more.
