Planning your trip to Chichen-Itza
When to go
November to February is the kind season: 28-32C by day, cool early mornings, and the great plaza bearable until mid-morning. It is also the busiest stretch and the priciest, especially between Christmas and early January. If you can choose, aim for November or the first half of February.
Around the equinox, on 20 and 21 March, the shadow of a serpent slides down the staircase of El Castillo and the site fills to its limit: thousands of people, long queues, hotels booked out months ahead. The effect is visible for several days on either side, with a fraction of the crowd.
March to May brings the hard inland heat: 38C and up, no shade anywhere on the main esplanade, and stone that throws the heat back at you. June to October means afternoon rain, thinner crowds and softer rates; August to October is hurricane season, which here usually means grey days and the occasional closure.
The hour matters more than the month. Gates open at eight, and the coaches from Cancún and the Riviera start arriving around eleven. Sleeping next door buys you exactly that: two hours of near-empty ruins and a swim before noon.
Getting there and around
Chichén Itzá sits about 120 km from Mérida and roughly 200 km from Cancún, on the corridor between them. The 180D toll road is fast and dull, with tolls running to several hundred pesos over the full stretch. The free 180 threads through villages, speed bumps and roadside stalls, takes considerably longer and costs nothing.
By bus, ADO links Mérida (about two hours) and Cancún (three to four, depending on stops) with Pisté and the terminal beside the archaeological zone. From Valladolid, 45 km east, departures are frequent and shared colectivos leave when full for something like MX$50 a head.
The Tren Maya has a station near the site with a transfer to the entrance, and it is comfortable when it runs. Schedules and frequencies have shifted repeatedly since it opened, so check the day before rather than building your whole itinerary around it.
Within Pisté everything is walkable. Village to gate is two kilometres: a taxi of roughly MX$50 to MX$100, or a hot, unshaded walk. A car pays off if you want the surrounding cenotes and Ek Balam; parking at the site is charged separately from the ticket.
Where to stay, zone by zone
By the entrance, on the old road, a handful of hotels sit in large gardens with pools and bungalow-style rooms. You pay for the address: you can be inside at eight and back for lunch without touching a car. It is the easiest option and the least like a Yucatecan village.
Pisté, two kilometres west on Highway 180, is the real town: family guesthouses, plain hotels, shops and loncherías. This is where the low rates live. Our 2026 scans logged only 4 hotels here with a real price, from US$39 a night and a typical from-rate of about US$63.
Valladolid, 45 km away, is the base with a pulse: colonial streets, the San Bernardino convent, the Calzada de los Frailes, cenotes in town and far more rooms to choose from. You trade an early 45-minute drive for better dinners and something to do after dark.
Mérida and Cancún work only as day-trip bases, which means arriving mid-morning in full heat and full crowds. That is what most visitors do, and it explains why the site feels overrun by noon. If the early gate matters to you, sleep closer and accept the quiet evening.
Eating and going out
Pisté eats Yucatecan and unfussy: panuchos, salbutes, cochinita in the morning, poc chuc, sopa de lima. A full meal in a village lonchería runs roughly MX$120 to MX$200, and at those hours you are eating alongside locals rather than tour groups.
Along the highway and near the gate there are big buffet restaurants built for coaches: efficient, competent and expensive for what they are. Fine if you arrive hungry and rushed; if you have half an hour, walk into town and pay about half for something better.
Going out, in the bar sense, barely exists. Pisté shuts early and the street is quiet by ten. Hotel restaurants are the only late option, and even they tend to close the kitchen around nine or ten. Plan dinner early and do not count on a nightcap.
The afternoon plan is water. Ik Kil, minutes from the ruins, is spectacular and heaves with groups; Yokdzonot, community-run about 20 km west, is calmer and has its own kitchen. Both charge entry, in the order of MX$100 to MX$200 per person.
Booking well
With only 4 hotels showing a real price in our scans, the operative word is early. In high season, around the equinox and on Mexican long weekends, the area sells out weeks or months ahead, and latecomers end up in Valladolid whether they planned to or not.
Before you confirm, check three things: proper air conditioning rather than a ceiling fan, whether there is a pool, and whether breakfast is included, because very little opens in Pisté at seven in the morning. Ask, too, whether the property takes cards or works in cash only.
Site admission is never included. You pay at the ticket window, in two separate tickets, totalling something in the order of MX$650 for foreign visitors; Mexican nationals pay considerably less and get a reduced Sunday rate. Bring cash in case the card terminals are down.
Always price Valladolid against Pisté before you book. If the nightly gap is small, the town gives you restaurants, ATMs, pharmacies and life after seven. If sleeping 200 metres from the gate saves you the first and best hour of the day, pay the difference and go early.
