Beds were not really comfortable. Mattresses were really hard. Bath was ok, spacious and clean, but while taking a shower it always happened that the water wasn't going away and formed a puddle. I stayed with my wife and daughter but only 2 towels were given and no hand towel available. Reservation was for 3 people. But the worst by far comes with the AC. We heard several times noises coming from the AC. It was very noisy and particularly annoying to hear at night. AC was turned on during the night and leaked water from the roof to the floor. The water caused my 6-month pregnant wife to slip a…

Planning your trip to Colima
When to go
November to February is Colima at its best: dry, 30-32°C by day, nights around 14-16°C, and air clear enough to see the Volcán de Fuego and the Nevado from most rooftops. Pack a long sleeve — evenings cool off more than the latitude leads you to expect.
March to June is the hot, dry stretch. May often runs 35-38°C and the countryside turns brown. Air conditioning stops being an extra here; check whether the room actually has it or only a ceiling fan, and whether using it costs anything on top.
From June to October it rains most afternoons, hard and brief, and the sierra goes green. That is the good season for the lakes and the bad one for dirt roads. It is also cyclone season on the Pacific: remnants reach Colima and can close stretches of highway for a day or two.
Two dates fill what little inventory exists: the Feria de Todos los Santos, late October to mid-November over in Villa de Álvarez, and the charro-taurine fiestas in early February. With eight hotels scanned in the city, those weeks genuinely sell out. Book several weeks ahead or plan to sleep elsewhere.
Getting there and around
Colima's airport sits at Cuauhtémoc, some 20-25 km from the centre, and handles only a handful of flights, mostly to Mexico City. For real choice, fly into Manzanillo, ninety minutes away by toll road, with domestic service and some seasonal international arrivals.
Buses do the heavy lifting. Guadalajara is 2.5 to 3 hours by motorway with departures all day; Manzanillo a little over an hour. Long-distance coaches use the terminal on the east side, while the suburban terminal runs short hops to Villa de Álvarez, Comala and Suchitlán for roughly MX$20-30.
The centre walks easily — five minutes from Jardín Libertad to Jardín Núñez, twenty for nearly everything else. City buses cost about MX$12 and taxis run MX$60-100 within town. Ride apps function but with thin coverage, so having the number of a taxi stand saves waiting.
Rent a car if the volcanoes, La Campana, Laguna La María or Carrizalillo are on the list. The motorways are good and tolled. Avoid mountain roads after dark: curves, livestock, no lighting and very little traffic if something goes wrong.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The historic centre — Jardín Libertad, the cathedral, the Palacio de Gobierno, Jardín Núñez — is the sensible base if you came to look around. Museums, arcades and evening cenadurías are all within walking distance. Hotels here are few and small, some in old courtyard houses, and the streets fall quiet early.
The avenues — Camino Real, Constitución, Niños Héroes and the road out to Guadalajara — hold the business hotels: modern rooms, parking, breakfast, dependable air conditioning. No charm at all, but they solve the problem when you arrive by car or the centre is full. Budget for taxis at dinner time.
Villa de Álvarez runs on from the city to the west: residential, good cheap food, and home to the fairgrounds. Comala, 10 km north, has small guesthouses and the whitewashed postcard village, but few of them publish prices online and public transport dries up early in the evening.

Eating and going out
Colima cooks its own things. Sopitos and sopes at the evening cenadurías, dry pozole, tatemado of pork in adobo, and a local ceviche minced fine with carrot. A set lunch runs roughly MX$100-150; a plate of sopitos and fried tacos costs a good deal less than that.
Drinks have their own repertoire: cold tuba with peanuts, bate, the fruit punch made around Comala, and coffee from those same hillsides. On Comala's plaza the custom is to order a drink in the afternoon and let the snacks arrive with it — an afternoon plan, never a late-night one.
Nights are modest and it is fair to say so. A few bars and cantinas around the centre, more movement along Camino Real and in Villa de Álvarez at weekends, and a city that shuts early midweek. For a long night out you want Guadalajara or the Manzanillo coast.
Breakfast is easy. The central markets open early, with menudo at weekends, and the cafés around the gardens fill mid-morning. If your hotel sits out on an avenue, check whether breakfast is included — walking to find one can be further than the map makes it look.

The rhythm is the reverse of a beach town. Demand is largely work-driven, so midweek fills and weekends tend to be more flexible. The exceptions are the October-November fair, the February fiestas and Holy Week, when regional visitors arrive and an eight-hotel supply simply runs out.
Ask three things before you pay: whether the air conditioning is real and in working order, whether parking is enclosed — it matters if you rent — and whether the room faces an avenue, because city buses start rolling before six in the morning.
If the city is full on a peak date, the small guesthouses in Comala work with a car, and Manzanillo is an hour away on the coast. Both mean commuting daily instead of sleeping where you actually want to be, so treat them as fallbacks, not plans.
