The people are very polite. The room was very clean. The decor and style is really cool. Very comfortable bathroom and hot water is great. The bed however was borderline terrible. Extremely stiff and noisy. Also the room we were given was above the employee entrance. Heard every conversation, all the radio traffic and every golf cart that pulled up throughout the night. Planning your trip to Ensenada
When to go
The climate is Mediterranean and the sea is cold all year: summer rarely tops 28°C, winter rarely drops below 10°C, and the water sits around 15-19°C. Bring a wetsuit if you plan to surf or swim. This is not a sun-lounger coast; it is wind, fog, wine and shellfish, best enjoyed with a jacket within reach.
May and June bring the marine layer — grey mornings that burn off by noon, or don't. July to October is the strongest run, with steady sun and the Valle de Guadalupe deep in harvest. August, with the wine festivities, is the fullest and priciest month of the year, and city hotels feel it.
December to March delivers what little rain there is, cold evenings and thinner Californian traffic, which is exactly when the kindest rates appear, especially midweek. It is also grey whale season, with boats going out from the pier. Dodge the off-road race weekends in June and November if your dates are flexible.
Getting there and around
Tijuana is the gateway. From San Diego you can walk straight into the terminal over the airport footbridge; from the rest of Mexico, fly to Tijuana and continue overland. It is 110 km on the scenic toll road, a long ninety minutes with traffic, with three tollbooths of around MX$60 each. The free road exists but takes considerably longer.
Car-free works fine. Buses run frequently from the Tijuana bus terminal and from the border crossing, roughly two hours and of the order of MX$300, and the Ensenada terminal sits a few blocks from downtown. In town the centre is walkable, a local taxi runs about MX$80-150, and ride apps operate, with fewer cars than in Tijuana.
A car transforms the trip if you want La Bufadora (some 35 km, about 45 minutes) or the Valle de Guadalupe (30-45 minutes). US-plated cars need Mexican insurance. Two warnings: the scenic road runs along cliffs with night fog, and tasting your way through the valley then driving home is a bad plan — hire a driver.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Zona Centro, along Avenida López Mateos — locals call it Primera — and its junctions with Ruiz, is where most hotels sit and where everything is walkable: promenade, seafood, bars, the cruise terminal. The trade-off is Friday and Saturday noise, when the downtown grid turns into a late-night party zone.
The Boulevard Costero and the Ventana al Mar flag plaza are the view option: hotels facing the bay, close to the Mercado Negro and the old Riviera building. Always ask whether the room actually faces the water or the boulevard, because the price is often identical and the night is not.
South of town the bay opens into a long beach towards Ejido Chapultepec and Estero Beach: calm, family-shaped, car essential. North, El Sauzal and San Miguel are surf territory, and the highway strip has cheaper roadside hotels that only make sense if you are driving everywhere anyway.
The Valle de Guadalupe is a separate plan: boutique properties among the vines, prices well above the city's typical rate, and very dark, very quiet nights. Eating and going out
People come here to eat. The battered fish taco is the local institution, roughly MX$30-50 at downtown stands, and the seafood tostadas and ceviches around the Mercado Negro are the other classic — eaten standing, with too much lime and salsa at your own risk. Go at midday, when the catch has spent the fewest hours out of the water.
Sitting down for fresh shellfish with a glass of valley wine, budget MX$300-500 a head; in the Valle de Guadalupe, considerably more, and nearly always with a reservation. Plenty of valley kitchens close early and some don't open midweek, so confirm before driving forty minutes down dirt roads.
After dark, Avenida Ruiz concentrates historic cantinas and newer bars, and the city has a genuinely good craft beer scene alongside its wine counters. On cruise days the centre swells with day visitors at lunchtime and empties by late afternoon. The mood is easygoing, but the usual rule applies: take a taxi back if you wander off the lit strip.

That means a busy weekend — harvest festivities, a race, a US holiday — genuinely sells out, and the gap between booking early and improvising on arrival is the difference between a decent central room and none at all.
The strategy is simple. Travel Tuesday to Thursday if your schedule allows, and compare the same night across two different weeks before committing. Favour flexible cancellation, because coastal weather and valley plans shift more than they seem to when you are booking from home.
Before you pay, check three things: whether the rate is quoted in pesos or dollars, whether parking is included — it is scarce downtown — and how far the hotel really is from the centre, since more than one beach-sounding address sits ten kilometres out with nothing around it.
Then check the noise. On López Mateos and Ruiz the weekend runs late, and thin windows are common. Light sleepers should ask for a high floor or an interior room, or shift a few blocks to the Boulevard Costero, past the racket and facing the water.
