Planning your trip to Ixtapan De La Sal

When to go

At around 1,880 m, Ixtapan has a mild highland climate with no real extremes: days of 24-27°C most of the year and cool nights. The dry season, November to April, is the most comfortable time to walk the town and the best time for the thermal water — sitting in a 36°C pool with 10°C air around you is the whole point.

From June to September it rains most days, usually from mid-afternoon. Mornings tend to be clear and the hills turn green, but open-air pools empty the moment thunder starts, and the winding access roads can be foggy early. It is also the quietest stretch midweek, which is not a bad trade if you plan mornings outdoors.

What really drives prices here is the Mexican long-weekend calendar: Holy Week, July and August, the year-end holidays and every Friday-to-Sunday fill the town with families from the capital and Toluca. A Saturday and a Tuesday in Ixtapan are effectively two different towns.

The honest caveat: midweek the place slows right down. You will find rooms without booking and softer rates, but also kitchens closing by nine and half-empty bathing complexes. Come at the weekend for atmosphere, midweek for hot water without queues.

Getting there and around

From Mexico City it is roughly 130 km: the Toluca motorway, then the Tenango–Ixtapan de la Sal road. Allow two and a half hours on a quiet morning, three or more if you leave on a Friday afternoon. Direct buses run from the Terminal Poniente (Observatorio) and cost in the order of MX$250-300 each way.

From Toluca, services are frequent: about ninety minutes and something like MX$100-150. From Taxco you can drive over in just over an hour via Tonatico and Pilcaya, handy if you are stitching Guerrero to the southern State of Mexico. Every approach road is a series of curves, so drive it in daylight and unhurried.

The centre is fully walkable and so is the boulevard, though with some slopes. Local taxis charge roughly MX$40-70 within town. You can manage with no car if you stay near the garden; a car opens up Tonatico, five kilometres away, the Grutas de la Estrella caves half an hour out, and Malinalco a little over an hour off.

Where to stay, zone by zone

The centre — parish church, garden, municipal market — is where the small inns are. This is where the bottom of our scans lives, around US$32 a night midweek, and where meals are cheapest. The trade-offs are weekend street noise and rooms that can look considerably better in photographs than in person.

The Bulevar Turístico San Román and Avenida Benito Juárez corridor is the balanced choice: mid-sized hotels, many with their own thermal pool and parking, walking distance to the Parque Acuático Ixtapan and the municipal baths. This is roughly where the US$100 typical rate from our 2026 scans sits.

On the outskirts are the large spa complexes: gardens, several thermal pools, packages with meals included. They work if the plan is not leaving the property for three days; if you wanted a town, you will be walking or calling taxis for everything. With only four priced hotels here, always compare what the rate actually covers.

Tonatico, the neighbouring village five kilometres south, has its own bathing complex and cheaper beds. It is a genuine option with a car and low expectations of nightlife; without a car, the taxi rides back and forth will quietly eat the saving.

Eating and going out

The set lunch does most of the work: small comedores around the market and the garden serve soup, a main and a jug of agua fresca for something like MX$100-150. At weekends the evening antojito stalls appear near the garden — quesadillas, tacos, corn — along with ice-cream and candied-fruit carts, the clearest sign of high season.

Along Bulevar San Román and inside the hotels you get tablecloth dining: grilled meat, pasta, buffet breakfasts, in the order of MX$250-400 a head. Spa hotels usually sell half-board packages and, if you were going to eat on site anyway, those generally beat ordering à la carte.

Nightlife: there is essentially none, and that is part of the deal. A couple of bars on the boulevard, live music in hotel lobbies on Saturdays, and midweek the town shuts early. An Ixtapan evening means a lit thermal pool, a temazcal if your hotel has one, and sleeping under blankets in cool mountain air.

Booking well

The sample here is small: our 2026 scans logged only four hotels with a real price, from US$32 a night and a median of about US$100. In a market that thin, one full hotel changes the whole weekend picture, so check rates earlier than a town this size would normally require.

For Fridays, Saturdays, long weekends and Holy Week, book weeks ahead and expect two-night minimums and higher rates. Midweek is the reverse: there is space, there is room to ask, and walking in works — though we would still lock in the first night before setting off.

Before you pay, ask the questions that matter here: is the pool genuinely thermal and what hours does it open, are meals included, do spa treatments or the temazcal cost extra, and is entry to the water park included or bought separately. Confirm parking too if you are driving.

In the rainy season a flexible-cancellation rate is worth the few dollars: one stormy afternoon can write off a day of outdoor pools. And when comparing a spa complex with a hotel in the centre, add up entry fees and meals before deciding which one is genuinely cheaper.
