The local airport has had patchy commercial service in recent years, so verify before planning around it. The standard route is to fly into Monterrey and drive two and a half to three hours, roughly 250 km. The bus terminal runs frequent departures to Monterrey, Saltillo and Piedras Negras. In town you will rely on rank taxis, roughly MX$70-120 a trip, and slow local buses.
Does Monclova work as a base for Cuatro Ciénegas?
Yes, and it is the city's strongest tourist argument: about 80 km on Highway 30, roughly an hour. Monclova has more rooms and services than the town itself, though far less charm. Leave early, since midday heat in summer is punishing and access to the pools is regulated, with only some open to visitors. Check opening hours and fees before you drive out.
