Breakfast in the large courtyard restaurant is always a treat with a wide range available both on the plated menu and the buffet. The rooftop ɓar and swimming pool both offer great views. Planning your trip to Orizaba
When to go
Orizaba sits at around 1,200 metres in a valley ringed by mountains, and that shapes everything: highs of 24-27°C for much of the year, nights of 10-14°C, and permanent humidity. You will not need air conditioning; you will want a light jacket and shoes that cope with wet pavement. The coastal heat of Veracruz stays on the far side of the passes.
The rainy season runs June to September, with afternoon downpours that last an hour or two and leave mornings clear. The rest of the year brings the chipichipi: fine, persistent drizzle that can settle in for days, especially from November to February. The cleanest skies, and the best chance of seeing the volcano, come between February and April, early.
Demand here is a weekend and long-weekend affair. Orizaba is a short escape from Puebla and Mexico City, and Saturdays fill the central hotels. Holy Week, the year-end holidays and the San Miguel Arcángel festivities in late September squeeze harder still. Come Tuesday to Thursday and it is a different town: unhurried, with rooms available at short notice.
Getting there and around
Most people arrive by bus. From Mexico City's TAPO terminal it is about four hours on the 150D motorway, with departures through the day; from Puebla, roughly two; from the port of Veracruz, ninety minutes to two hours. Córdoba is twenty to thirty minutes away. The terminal is a little over a kilometre from Parque Castillo — a short taxi, or a walk with light luggage.
Driving, the 150D is a good toll road, but the Cumbres de Maltrata stretch means long gradients, heavy truck traffic and frequent fog. Drive in daylight, leave slack in your timing, and skip the free road after dark. The practical airports are Veracruz, about two hours out, and Puebla; from Mexico City reckon a long four and a half hours.
In town, a car is more nuisance than help. The historic centre is flat and small, and the Paseo del Río strings several kilometres of walkway along the water. Short taxi rides run around MX$40-70, and local buses and shared vans head to Río Blanco, Ciudad Mendoza, Nogales and Fortín de las Flores for a handful of pesos.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The historic centre is the short answer. Around Parque Castillo, the cathedral and the Palacio de Hierro you will find hotels in old townhouses and converted buildings, plus a few plainly modern ones, all within walking range of museums, the market and restaurants. Ask for a room off the street if noise wakes you: the main avenues carry traffic from early morning.
A few blocks on, towards the Paseo del Río and the Alameda, sleep comes easier and you can step straight out for a walk or a run beside the water. It is a tidy residential pocket still ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the main square. Confirm parking before you book — the numbered streets are narrow and space is scarce.
Out by the motorway exits and the industrial corridor towards Río Blanco, Nogales and Ciudad Mendoza sit the work-and-transit hotels: generous parking, early breakfast, no charm whatsoever. They earn their keep if you are here for business at the local plants or simply breaking a drive to Veracruz. For sightseeing, the daily shuttle back into town is not worth it.

Eating and going out
Breakfast is early and generous. Picadas, gorditas, memelas and tamales dominate the small kitchens and stalls of the centre, and a set lunch runs somewhere around MX$100-160. This is highland Veracruz cooking — more corn, beans and dried chilli than seafood — though fish arrives fresh from the coast and several central restaurants handle it well.
Coffee alone justifies a slow morning. The neighbouring sierras around Córdoba, Huatusco and Zongolica grow high-altitude beans, and a handful of central cafés roast their own and will talk you through it. Beer is part of the civic furniture too: the city's large brewery has been one of its biggest employers for well over a century.
Nights are quiet. There are bars and old-style cantinas in the centre, busiest Friday and Saturday; midweek, much of the town shuts early. The real social ritual is the riverside walk at dusk, with families, runners and the municipal animal enclosures alongside the path. Carry an umbrella — the drizzle arrives without warning and does not always leave.

With so few hotels in play, booking ahead matters more here than in a big city. For long weekends, Holy Week, the year-end period and the late-September festivities, reserve weeks out: the good central places go first and what remains is roadside. Midweek is the opposite — you can usually turn up and find a room the same day.
Ask three questions before you pay: is there on-site parking, how is the room heated, and how exposed is it to street noise. Air conditioning is irrelevant here, but blankets are not — January nights drop below 10°C and plenty of older buildings have no heating at all. Damp also shows up in rooms that get little ventilation.
Choose flexible cancellation if you are driving. Fog in the Cumbres de Maltrata can cost you hours, and journey times stretch in the rains. Flag a late arrival if you expect to check in after ten at night, since small hotels do not always staff reception around the clock.
