Friendly and helpful staff 24/7. We stayed for a total of four days. The rooms are clean and the bed is comfortable. Parking is available away from the busy narrow streets of the neighborhood. However, this time we did not travel by car. Overall, we are planning to come back to the beautiful city of San Christobal de las Casas and planning to stay again in Jardines del Centro.
Great location and parking, unfortunately the room was old and moldy. Pillow had mold also. One outlet only in the middle of the beds and had to ask for an adaptor to connect medical equipment.
Planning your trip to San Cristobal De Las Casas
When to go
From November to February the sky stays clean: frost on the roofs at dawn, 20-22°C in the midday sun, and nights that fall to a few degrees. It is the best light of the year and the busiest stretch as well, peaking over Christmas and New Year. Early December adds the processions up to the Guadalupe hill church, which fill that barrio for days.
March and April are the mildest months before the rains and among the dearest: Holy Week runs straight into the Feria de la Primavera y de la Paz and the city fills with Mexican visitors. Book far ahead for those weeks and accept that the andador will be lively until late.
June to October rains almost daily, but on a timetable: clear mornings, a mid-afternoon downpour, cold clear nights. September is the wettest month and, along with May and June, the cheapest in our 2026 scans. The countryside is green and the dirt roads out to the villages turn slippery.
The honest caveat here is cold and altitude rather than heat. At 2,200 metres the shade chills you in seconds and the uphill blocks tire you for the first two days. Pack layers, something waterproof from May to October, and thick socks year-round: adobe houses hold the cool even when the sun is out.
Getting there and around
The airport that matters is Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ), down in the valley. The climb up the highway takes around 1 hour 15 by shared van or bus, in the order of MX$250-400 per person on the services leaving the terminal; a private taxi costs considerably more. Leave slack on the way back — fog on the high stretch delays things regularly.
Overland, ADO arrives from Palenque in about 5 hours, from Villahermosa and Tuxtla, and from Oaxaca on an eleven- or twelve-hour night bus. The Ocosingo road to Palenque is beautiful and now and then affected by roadblocks or protests; check conditions the morning you travel, and do not drive it after dark.
In town you need no car: zócalo to El Cerrillo or Guadalupe is a ten-minute walk, and the bus station sits about fifteen minutes from the centre on foot — uphill with luggage. Local taxis charge a short flat fare, in the order of MX$40-60 at 2025 prices; ride-hailing apps work only patchily.
Colectivos for Chamula and Zinacantán leave from around the municipal market for a handful of pesos, though a local guide earns their fee in context alone. Sumidero, El Chiflón, Montebello and Agua Azul are full-day tours: four to six hours of road round trip, with no shortcuts.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The core is the rectangle between the zócalo, Santo Domingo and the Real de Guadalupe andador: two-storey courtyard houses, cafés and agencies on foot. You pay for the location and also for the noise — live music and bars run late at weekends. Light sleepers should ask for an interior room, or move one block off the strip.
El Cerrillo, north of Santo Domingo, and the Guadalupe barrio along the walkway up to the hill church are the best balance: the same old houses, five minutes on foot, quiet nights. Mexicanos and Santa Lucía, to the west, come slightly cheaper and feel residential, with fewer restaurants around the corner.

By profile: first visit, three blocks off the zócalo; couples, a house with a fireplace in Guadalupe or El Cerrillo; families and long stays, the kitchen apartments around Mexicanos; tight budget, the guesthouses at the upper end of Real de Guadalupe. Whichever you choose, ask how the room is heated and whether the hot water holds at seven in the morning.
Eating and going out
Chiapas eats differently from the rest of the south: sopa de pan, cochito horneado, tamales de bola and chipilín, butifarra, Ocosingo cheese. A set lunch in a fonda or at the market runs MX$80-130 at 2025 prices; restaurants on the andador charge double for less local cooking. The municipal market, north of the centre, is the best cheap breakfast in town.
Coffee justifies half the trip: the beans come from the state's highland farms and several roasters in the centre pour single-origin filters for something like MX$40-70. The same goes for chocolate and bread — the bakeries around El Cerrillo open early and are the right answer to a cold morning.
Nights here are musical rather than rowdy: trova, jazz, cumbia and salsa in small bars on and around Real de Guadalupe, winding down towards one or two. Pox, the local maize-and-cane distillate, is poured in several places downtown — pace the first round, because at 2,200 metres it lands sooner than you expect.
Walking the centre at night is normal and reasonably safe; a few blocks out the lighting thins and a taxi is the sensible call. Watch your bag and phone on the crowded andador, and leave nothing visible in a rental car. Beyond that, this is a city you enjoy on foot without drama.

Check three things before paying: heating or a fireplace, water pressure and temperature, and whether the room opens onto the patio — lovely, but you hear everything and it keeps the night cold.
Many small guesthouses prefer cash or add a card fee; ask when you book and carry pesos, since downtown ATMs run dry on long weekends. For stays of several weeks, write to the hotel directly — off-season monthly rates fall well below the nightly figure.
