The food is amazing a true Mexican cuisine, but with the wisdom of a chef that offers various combinations that are absolutely astonishing.
The hotel offers a great experience for families but is limited to no more than 2 days and along weekends where there's Buffett on breakfast and pool and animal activities, during week days the options are limited and there's no Buffett and prices are out of normal (1 small omelette 10USD). I do not understand why, considering all this structure, the hotel does not offer summer camp to kids, gynkana or any other activity that brings more customers, it's a waste of resources. Great Great place in terms of Vibe / beautiful architecture and solutions, colors and trees, Magical experince and a true pleasure for the eyes and the soul - Yet not for the taste buds ! Planning your trip to San Juan Del Rio
When to go
The climate works in your favour most of the year. At around 1,900 metres you get mild days and cool nights. March to May brings dry heat, afternoons of 28-30°C and a lot of dust; June to September brings afternoon downpours that clear the air and turn the countryside green. That rainy stretch is, oddly enough, the prettiest time to drive the cheese-and-wine route.
Winter is dry and bright, but December and January dawns drop close to freezing and fog on Highway 57 is a fact rather than an anecdote. If you are driving, start late in the morning. And ask how the room heats: not every hotel in this corridor handles cold nights well.
The San Juan fair, around 24 June, is the busiest local moment and overlaps with the cheese-and-wine festivities in Tequisquiapan and Ezequiel Montes. Holy Week and long weekends also clog the highway. Outside those dates the city keeps a steady working rhythm with few surprises for your booking.
Getting there and around
San Juan del Río sits on Federal Highway 57, the spine linking Mexico City with the Bajío. Driving takes about two hours from the north of the capital with clear traffic and roughly 45 minutes to Querétaro city. Real travel times vary: this stretch carries an enormous volume of freight and roadworks come and go, so do not plan to the minute.
Buses run frequently from Mexico City's Terminal Norte, two and a half to three hours, with fares of the order of MX$300-400 depending on line and class. The bus station sits on the edge of the centre; a taxi from there to a downtown hotel runs around MX$50-80, and a little more out to the highway hotels.
The handiest airport is Querétaro Intercontinental, 45-60 minutes by road; Mexico City is two and a half to three hours out. Neither has a direct public link to the city, so budget for a taxi, a rental car or a hotel transfer — and confirm the transfer before you fly rather than on arrival.
In town, you can cross the centre on foot in twenty minutes. Beyond that there are local buses at roughly MX$12 and rank taxis; ride apps work patchily. If your plan includes Tequisquiapan, the Peña de Bernal or the Ezequiel Montes vineyards, a car stops being optional and becomes the trip itself.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The historic centre is the only area with character: Plaza de los Fundadores, the Portal del Diezmo, the parish church and the low streets around them. Hotel options are few and mostly simple, with a handful of adapted old houses. In exchange you walk to dinner and never touch the car. Ask for an inside room if you sleep lightly — the plaza plays music late on weekends.
The Highway 57 corridor and the exits towards Querétaro hold the chain and roadside hotels: generous parking, breakfast included, late check-in and quick access to the industrial parks. It is the logical choice for a meeting or an overnight stop on a long drive. It is also the choice where there is nothing at all to do on foot after seven.

Eating and going out
Food here is working-city food, and that has its own appeal: set lunches at MX$100-150 in downtown fondas, morning gorditas and stewed-filling tacos, and weekend barbacoa, the speciality of this whole belt between Querétaro and Hidalgo. The municipal market is the best gauge of both prices and cooking.
Under the arcades on the main plaza you will find the cafés and terraces where the town sits and watches itself. It is an afternoon plan more than a late-night one. Nightlife exists but is low-key and firmly weekend-based: midweek, the city eats early and shuts early.
The surrounding countryside is the real gastronomic draw. The art, cheese and wine route runs through Tequisquiapan and Ezequiel Montes, with raw-milk cheeses and Querétaro still and sparkling wines. You need a car, tastings are best booked ahead on weekends, and you should count on half a long day plus a driver who abstains.
Downtown you will also see windows full of opal and cut stones: San Juan del Río has a long lapidary tradition and remains a gem-cutting hub. If you buy, ask questions and compare without hurrying — quality and prices swing widely from one shop to the next.
Booking well
Book further ahead for weekdays than for weekends. It is the reverse of the tourist-town pattern and it catches people out: a Tuesday in a busy industrial stretch can leave you without a decent room, while a Saturday usually has space. June, with the fair and the regional cheese-and-wine season, tightens the whole area at once.
Check the exact pin on the map before you pay. Plenty of properties advertise as "San Juan del Río" but sit out on the highway, ten or fifteen minutes from the centre with no pavement to walk on. Without a car, that gap becomes a taxi fare every time you want dinner.
Get three things confirmed in writing: whether parking is included, whether breakfast is in the rate, and what happens if you arrive in the small hours, which is common when you drive in on the 57. Also ask about road noise — it is the most frequent complaint at the corridor hotels.
