I would have stayed for a month if I could. Also, the restaurant serves incredible food. The chef is top notch. The staff and manager make you feel right at home. One of the best resort stays ever.
This place is so perfect, it’s hard to describe in words. Not only does it look like something out of a design magazine, but it also makes you feel deeply connected to the surrounding nature—nature that is fully respected and remains the true protagonist of the stay. Despite being “lost in the forest,” it offers an incredible number of facilities, making it comfortable even for those who may not be used to being so close to nature. My favorite part was the sound of the ocean throughout the day and night. The restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. The hosts are super nice and welcoming—…
It’s exactly as described! Peaceful place with carefully designed spaces. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Their pool areas are also a great place just to chill and swim. Very much a place for grownup’s as opposed to young family vibes. I’d recommend for couples especially:)
Planning your trip to Santa Maria Tonameca
When to go
The dry season runs November to April: days of 30-33°C, a better-behaved sea and warm nights. It is also the priciest and busiest stretch, with hard peaks from 20 December to 5 January and over Holy Week. July and August fill up with Mexican holidaymakers without reaching those extremes. November and early December are the best balance.
From June to October it rains, usually as afternoon or overnight storms, and the hills turn green. This is when you can turn up without a booking and rates soften. In exchange you get more mosquitoes, constant humidity and a few closures in September, the flattest month on the whole Oaxacan coast.
Two honest warnings. There is no cool season here: May is the heaviest month, just before the rains break, and a ceiling fan does not always cut it. And this is open Pacific, with heavy shorebreak and rip currents; Rinconcito and the sheltered ends of San Agustinillo are the manageable spots, the rest is not for casual swimming.
Getting there and around
Two airports work. Huatulco is roughly 55-60 km east along Highway 200, about an hour by road. Puerto Escondido is 65-70 km west, a little over an hour. Neither has direct public transport to Mazunte: you either take a taxi, on the order of MX$800-1,200 depending on airport and time, or ride a shared van down to Pochutla first.
From Oaxaca City, the classic route over Highway 175 crosses the sierra in six or seven hours of unbroken curves; if you get carsick, medicate beforehand or take an overnight bus. The new highway towards Puerto Escondido has cut that journey substantially, with the coastal stretch still to drive afterwards. Check schedules and road conditions in the rainy months.
Pochutla is the practical hub: bus terminals, banks, market and hospital. Pickups and shared taxis leave its highway strip for Mazunte, San Agustinillo and Zipolite for around MX$30-40 until dusk. A private taxi from Pochutla runs about MX$250-300, and you should agree the fare before getting in.
You do not need a car. Mazunte's lanes are steep and narrow with almost no parking, and mototaxis cover the village for MX$20-30. If you do drive, ask your hotel whether it has its own space, and avoid Highway 200 after dark: unmarked speed bumps and loose cattle are the standard hazards.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Mazunte village and Rinconcito beach is the default: the densest cluster of cabañas and small hotels, plus food, shops and transport. You sleep close to everything and walk to the Punta Cometa trail. The trade-off is street noise and weekend bar sound; light sleepers should ask for a room at the back or upstairs.
The slope towards Mermejita and the Punta Cometa path holds the view rooms and the eco-minded places: sea terraces, ceiling fans, air conditioning not guaranteed. You pay in stairs and a ten-to-fifteen minute climb with luggage. San Agustinillo, two kilometres east, is a short tidy beach that suits couples and families who want an early night.
La Ventanilla is a different proposition: few beds, community management, mangrove with crocodiles and birdlife, and very little happening after dark. Good if you want isolation and don't mind depending on shared transport. The inland town of Santa María Tonameca, up on the highway, has basic guesthouses useful for work, paperwork or an overnight stop; there is no sightseeing reason to stay.
Be realistic about our numbers: three hotels scanned in 2026, from US$110 with a typical rate of about US$118. That is a partial picture of the bookable-online slice. Simple cabañas, hostels and fan-only rooms usually cost far less and are found by messaging owners directly or asking on arrival.
Eating and going out
The food is better than the village size suggests. Expect day-boat fish and seafood, plain Oaxacan cooking, and a strong Italian and vegetarian streak left by foreign residents who settled here decades ago. Budget roughly MX$100-150 for a set lunch, MX$180-280 for a fillet or a whole fish, and MX$40-70 for a beer at a beach table.
For groceries at normal prices, Pochutla's market is the place: fruit, vegetables, fish and everything that costs more in Mazunte after the haul up the road. Village shops cover basics, not a real shop. Carry cash — ATMs are few, they run dry at weekends, and plenty of places take no cards or add a fee.
Nights are short and low-key. The fixed ritual is sunset from Punta Cometa, followed by mezcal, occasional live music and kitchens closing around eleven. If you want later, Zipolite is ten minutes away by shared taxi and keeps different hours. In November the Mazunte jazz festival fills the village and every available bed.
Booking well
For Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, book months ahead. These are small properties, five to fifteen rooms, and they sell out whole; minimum stays of three to seven nights and prepayment are normal in those windows. Outside the peaks, two or three weeks is enough, and in the rainy season you can improvise.
Ask the concrete questions before paying: fan or air conditioning, hot water, whether water is rationed — Mazunte has genuine shortages in the dry months — mosquito nets, and how many steps lie between the room and the street. Many view rooms mean hauling bags uphill. Travelling with children or limited mobility, get it confirmed in writing.
Have a cash plan. Book the hotel online if you can, but bring enough pesos for meals, shared taxis and tours; bank-transfer deposits are common and worth keeping a receipt for. Power cuts happen, especially during storms, and not every place has a generator.
