4.2403 reviewsHey, nice hotel with some concerns. Location is great with Mountain Views and a hotel top terrace. Also a great pool that was nicely cool in APR 2024. Some minor cosmetic issues with aging facility. Largest concern was no AC. Several cockroaches noted in rooms.
The room was very large. No air conditioning, just a big fan. From the rooftop cafe there were great views. What I liked about it least was the chairs and the large pillow had large stains.
Excellent location, all the amenities, great breakfast, nice views from the top in this beautiful hotel, the staff is always helpful and ready to solve any issues if you have one, rooms are spacious, and well decorated, nice garden and pool area to relax having a drink from the bar. The only thing we noted is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms, we visited during March and the temperatures were really nice, but I can imagine that during summer it might get hot in the rooms. A great plus is the parking, because if you have been to Tepoztlan, you know that parking can be a struggle
Planning your trip to Tepoztlan
When to go
Dry season runs November to May, and it is the one most people want. From November to February days sit around 24-26°C and nights drop to 10-12°C; heating is rare in local rooms, so ask about duvets and hot water. March to May turns hot and dusty, low 30s, with the hillsides yellowed and grit on the cobbles.
From June to October it rains most afternoons. The valley goes brilliant green and mornings usually start clear, but the Tepozteco trail gets slick and is occasionally closed after heavy rain or rockfall. In those months, climb early and keep the afternoon for the market, the ex-convent or a temazcal.
The calendar that really matters here is weekly rather than seasonal. Friday to Sunday the capital arrives en masse: rates jump, the main avenue clogs, and restaurants around the plaza run a wait. Tuesday to Thursday is a different town altogether. Annual peaks are Carnival, with the chinelos dancers in February or March, the Tepozteco festival on 7-8 September, Day of the Dead, Holy Week and long weekends.
Getting there and around
From Mexico City the simple option is the bus from Terminal del Sur, at Taxqueña: roughly an hour and a quarter, tickets of the order of MX$150-200 each way. Departures are frequent, but the last services back leave in the early evening, so check the timetable before you plan dinner here and a bed in the capital.
Landing at the Mexico City airport, there are coaches to Cuernavaca and then a taxi or shared van, some 25 km. Driving, take the 95D toll road toward Cuernavaca and exit at Tepoztlán: an hour and a quarter without traffic, plus tolls. Sunday afternoon northbound is a bottleneck — leave early, or leave after dark.
In town, everything is twenty minutes on foot, but uphill and over uneven stone: bring shoes with grip, not smooth-soled sandals. Local taxis run about MX$40-60 inside the village, and shared combis leave the centre for Santa Catarina, Amatlán and San Juan Tlacotenco for MX$20-40. Ride-hailing apps work erratically, and weekend parking is genuinely scarce, so count a hotel space as a real advantage.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre, spread across the eight traditional barrios — Santo Domingo, San Miguel, Los Reyes, Santa Cruz, La Santísima, San Sebastián, San Pedro and San José — makes sense if you arrive without a car. You are steps from the zócalo, the market and the UNESCO-listed ex-convent, and the Tepozteco path starts a few blocks up. The trade-off is sound: bells, plaza music and pre-dawn fireworks during festivals.
Slightly out, toward Valle de Atongo and the lower slopes, sit the houses with gardens, pools and a view of the rock wall. You gain quiet and scenery and lose the two-minute stroll to the market, which becomes a fifteen-to-twenty-minute climb or a short taxi. This is the better zone for couples, or for anyone who genuinely wants to sleep.
Along the federal road to Cuernavaca and the stretch down toward the motorway are larger hotels and spas with temazcal and pools, designed for weekenders with cars; walking is not an option. Further out, Amatlán de Quetzalcóatl, Santa Catarina and San Andrés de la Cal offer cabins and retreats — excellent for switching off, awkward if you want dinner in the village.

Eating and going out
The local dish is the itacate, a fat triangle of griddled corn masa, stuffed or topped with a stew, sold in the market and from street stalls for something like MX$30-60. Add cecina from Yecapixtla, quesadillas with squash flower or huitlacoche, tlacoyos, and the strangely flavoured ice creams sold around the zócalo. Cheap and good here is a stall business, not a tablecloth one.
Avenida Revolución 1910, running from the plaza toward the exit, holds most of the restaurants, specialty coffee, mezcalerías and a striking amount of vegetarian and vegan cooking — Tepoztlán has decades of retreats and alternative medicine behind it. A sit-down meal lands around MX$250-450 a head before drinks, and at weekends you will queue, especially between two and five.
Nightlife is short and contained: a few bars near the plaza, live music on Saturday, little beyond that, and plenty shut by mid-evening from Monday to Thursday. Sunday is the big day, when the tianguis spills through the centre with crafts, amate paper, herbs and food. If crowds wear you down, do the market on a Wednesday.
Booking well
The basic rule: for a Friday or Saturday, book weeks ahead and accept the high rate; midweek you get more choice and a better price for the same room. For Carnival, Holy Week, the September Tepozteco festival and long weekends, the good places are gone months in advance.
Ask concrete questions before you pay: whether the room has heating or at least a proper duvet for January nights, how many steps lie between the street and the bed, whether there are mosquito screens in the rainy months, and whether parking is included. Many properties are converted houses — charming, with steep stairs and small bathrooms.
Two-night weekend minimums are common, and temazcal sessions, breakfast and massages are often billed on top of the headline rate. Check the cancellation terms as well: in a weekend destination, non-refundable rates look like a bargain right up to the moment it rains for three days straight.
