The staff were professional and accommodating for our bigger party, they were able to get us room last minute with no reservations. We had a wonderful stay and so thankful to experience the beauty of this hotel. My only complaint was the sewers smells that roamed the room at night. Other than that great place stay if needed I would probably stay again.
It is a great hotel, the staff provides excellent service. It has nice facilities and professional staff at the spa. Unfortunately the restaurant is overpriced; it's good, but advantageous on their pricing policy (for example: their hamburger is worth the same as a Gordon Ramsay’s one 😀 and the truth is, it's quality is not even close). ….
Cannot link the wifi in the hotel with my MacBook, only can link it with my phones. Safe place because it’s enclosed in a community, only people stay inside can enter. Environment good with an outdoor hot spring. Bed very big and comfortable(unlike many hotels in Mexico). Restaurant good but very expensive.
Planning your trip to Tula De Allende
When to go
Tula sits just above 2,000 metres in the semi-arid Valle del Mezquital, and the default weather is dry and bright: open skies, hard sun, almost no shade. March to May is the warm stretch, days around 28-30°C with dust in the air. December and January bring near-freezing dawns and mild afternoons. Pack layers — the gap between 7am and 3pm is enormous.
Rain arrives June to September, usually as an hour-long afternoon storm that clears the air afterwards. The honest caveat is the river: in September 2021 the Río Tula burst its banks and flooded much of the low-lying town. It is not a daily risk, but in a heavy rainy season it is worth watching the forecast before you commit.
For walking the ruins, October and November are the sweet spot, with the countryside still green, while February and March are dry and clear. Skip 21 March unless you enjoy crowds: the equinox fills the site with white-clad visitors. Spring is also escamol and maguey-worm season in local kitchens — short, pricey and worth trying once.
One more honest point. Tula lives alongside a large refinery and several cement plants. Some days you smell it, and winter mornings can trap haze under a temperature inversion. It rarely ruins a visit, but if you have asthma or a sensitive chest, factor it into how many nights you book here rather than in a neighbouring town.
Getting there and around
Buses from Mexico City leave the Terminal Central del Norte through the day and take roughly 90 minutes to two hours, depending on how badly the city exit is jammed; reckon on MX$150-200 each way. They arrive at Tula's terminal, a short walk or a cheap taxi ride from the plaza.
Driving, take the México-Querétaro motorway to the Jorobas turn-off and cut across to Tula: about 90 minutes clear, plus tolls. Sunday evenings the Querétaro road clogs with returning weekenders, so leave early or leave late. Parking in the centre gets tight on market days.
AIFA airport is roughly an hour away by road, closer and calmer than Benito Juárez, which is nearer two hours. Pachuca, the state capital, is a little over an hour east. Local buses and shared vans link Tula with Tepeji del Río, Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul and the villages of the Mezquital for a few pesos.
Around town the centre is walkable, but the archaeological zone is two kilometres uphill and the walk is fully exposed; a taxi runs on the order of MX$50-70 and saves you the sun. One local caution: don't drive rural back roads after dark. The region has a history of fuel theft and the lighting is poor.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre, around the Plaza de la Constitución and the San José monastery, is the only genuinely walkable part of town: market, cheap kitchens, late taco stands, taxis on the corner. It is the obvious choice if you arrive by bus. The trade-off is noise — traffic and freight start early and the streets are narrow.
The highway corridor out towards Jorobas and the industrial park is where work-trip lodging clusters: easy parking, functional rooms, late check-ins, no atmosphere. Without a car it makes no sense at all. With one, it is efficient if your day starts at a plant gate rather than at the central garden.
Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul, in Jasso about five kilometres out, is a quiet company town with very few beds — people sleep there for work, not for sightseeing. If Tula is full, Tepeji del Río half an hour away and Pachuca just over an hour away make workable alternative bases.

Eating and going out
Hidalgo is barbacoa country, and Tula eats it early. On weekend mornings, roughly eight until noon, stalls and small kitchens serve lamb tacos and a bowl of consomé until the pit runs dry. The municipal market is the least ceremonious place to try it, and the cheapest by a distance.
Beyond barbacoa, look for ximbó — meat cooked wrapped in maguey leaves — plus mixiotes and, in spring, escamoles and maguey worms. Pulque is still a living drink in the Mezquital, though you'll find it in plain neighbourhood pulquerías rather than in anything designed with visitors in mind.
Day to day, a set lunch in the centre runs about MX$100-140 and tacos far less. Nights are quieter: a few cantinas and a couple of bars near the garden, and that is essentially the list. Midweek the town shuts early. For a night out with real options, that means Pachuca or Mexico City.

Before you confirm, ask three questions: is parking included, do they take cards, and does the room face the highway. And if all you want is the Atlantes, consider the honest alternative — a day trip from Mexico City, about two hours each way — and sleep somewhere you would actually choose.
