About staying in Tuxpan
Tuxpan is a river town before it is a beach town. The malecón along Boulevard Jesús Reyes Heroles is the real centre: small boats ferrying people across to Santiago de la Peña, cargo ships easing upstream, seafood counters and the evening stroll. The beach sits about twelve kilometres east, out along the coast road. This is a port, oil and transit city on the edge of the Huasteca, and its hotels reflect that. Our 2026 scans found just 5 properties with a live rate: from US$75 a night, with a typical figure of around US$82 — a small sample, tilted toward business hotels.

Which part of Tuxpan should I stay in?
Without a car, stay central, near Parque Reforma and the malecón: restaurants, the market and the boat landing are all on foot. If the beach is the point, the hotels along the Playa Tuxpan road put you on the sand but far from everything else. The Tampico highway and Santiago de la Peña are pure work-trip territory: parking, easy exits, little atmosphere.
When are rooms cheapest?
Two things drive demand: weekday business travel and holiday beach traffic. Easter week, July and August and the long weekends are the expensive stretches, especially on the coast. Midweek outside holidays, and the rainy months of September and October, tend to be quietest. With only five hotels in our scans, compare actual dates rather than trusting any seasonal rule of thumb.
How do I get there, and can I manage without a car?
From Mexico City it is roughly five hours on the México-Tuxpan toll road, and several direct buses run daily; Poza Rica is an hour away, Tampico about three. There is no commercial airport in town. Once here, the centre walks easily, the river launches cost a few pesos, and a town taxi runs around MX$50-80.
Is the beach worth the trip?
It is a long, dark-sand Gulf beach with palapa restaurants, real surf and water often clouded by the river — not a Caribbean postcard. Midweek it is close to empty and genuinely pleasant; at Easter and in summer it fills with families from Poza Rica and the central highlands. A taxi from town costs roughly MX$150-250 each way.
