You can hear utility carts rolling outside the room all the time even during the evening. Staff at the front desk was not welcoming or servicial at all. I’m a Bonvoy gold member and was not greeted as usual. I also asked for a room close to an elevator because I’m pregnant and it looks like I literally asked for the opposite. We stayed for 4 nights and didn’t really enjoy it.
Not giving it 5 stars because of 2 main reasons: 1. The gym equipment is old from like the 90s, the benches height can't be adjusted and the polleys are so old you can't adjust the height. Gym is a 2/5 2. The room keys deactivate out of nowhere in the middle of the stay. I do believe that the price is reasonable for what the hotel offers you, but it's worth mentioning that the place is old, and it keeps a 90s luxury style, some might like it. The pool is beautiful and the personnel are very kind.
The front desk staff were quite helpful and taxi staff, but the rest were not unfortunately. Firstly the restaurant staff, ordered food and specified no diary. Was nicely given food with cheese, they took it back but rather it being newly made they attempted to take the cheese out and cover/mix it in. Very pathetic there. Secondly bar staff. They were nowhere to be seen in two attempts and that was with waiting in seating nearby. Lastly room service. Planning your trip to Tuxtla
When to go
The comfortable window runs November to March: dry, afternoons around 30-33°C and nights that finally drop. It is also the best stretch for the canyon, because after heavy rain the river carries rubbish and water hyacinth downstream, and what floats past the boat does not always match the picture you had in mind. December and January are the rounded months.
April to June is when Tuxtla shows its teeth: a low valley with no breeze, thermometers near 38°C and sticky nights. Nothing shuts down — the city works regardless — but your rhythm changes: canyon at dawn, siesta or pool at midday, streets again by seven. If heat wears you down, this is not your season.
June to September brings afternoon storms, usually short and cooling, and the canyon turns green; the Árbol de Navidad waterfall runs hard, though the river runs muddier. Prices barely move either way: demand is business and transit. The exceptions are January's Fiesta Grande in Chiapa de Corzo, Holy Week and the Mexican long weekends.
Getting there and around
Ángel Albino Corzo sits 30-45 minutes south down a low mountain road; authorised taxis and terminal vans run about MX$300-450 into the centre, and shared vans leave straight for San Cristóbal without touching the city. Flights are almost all domestic, with Mexico City the main artery. Landing late and sleeping on the boulevard is the practical move.
Overland, the main bus terminal sits on the western corridor: San Cristóbal an hour up the toll road, Palenque five or six hours, Oaxaca and Mexico City on long overnight runs. Colectivo vans to San Cristóbal leave every few minutes for something in the order of MX$70-100 — the choice for anyone travelling light.
In town, nearly everything hangs off one axis: Avenida Central, which becomes Boulevard Belisario Domínguez as it runs west. Taxis cost MX$50-90 across the urban area, colectivos are cheap and chaotic, and the ride-hailing apps work fine. For the canyon's rim lookouts — La Ceiba, La Coyota, El Roblar — a rental car or a tour is the only comfortable way.
Two honest warnings: the boulevard clogs at rush hour, and the Libramiento Norte bypass saves you the crosstown crawl if you are heading to Chiapa de Corzo or San Cristóbal. And road blockades do happen in Chiapas, with no notice and no schedule; if you have a flight, leave early and ask at reception before setting off.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Boulevard Belisario Domínguez holds the chain and business hotels: parking, air conditioning that actually works, breakfast included and a fast exit to the highway. It is the comfortable zone, not the pretty one. Ask for a room facing inward — the avenue is wide and loud at every hour of the day.
The Centro, around the Parque de la Marimba and the cathedral square, is the other pole: plain hotels, some in ageing buildings, steps from the best evening in town. If the plan is the canyon at dawn, consider sleeping in Chiapa de Corzo instead: a colonial town half an hour east, walking distance from the pier and closer to the airport. It has few rooms, and in January the Parachicos fill and price them; outside those weeks it is a far pleasanter night than the valley floor.
By profile: one night in transit, the boulevard with an eastern exit; family in the heat, a hotel with a pool — here that is infrastructure, not luxury; budget plus atmosphere, the blocks around the Marimba; dawn flight, somewhere on the southern axis so you are not crossing town at five in the morning.
Eating and going out
Chiapas cooking is inland food and stands on its own: oven-roasted cochito, tamales of chipilín and tamal de bola, tasajo with pumpkin-seed sauce, butifarra sausage, and pozol — cold maize and cacao — as the antidote to one in the afternoon. A market breakfast runs about MX$60-100 and a set lunch MX$90-150 at 2025 prices.
Evenings start at the Parque de la Marimba: the band plays free, older couples dance danzón, and the tables around serve highland Chiapas coffee and tascalate. It is family-scaled, calm, and the best free thing in the city; arrive before seven if you want a chair.
The boulevard carries the other life: bars, late taquerías, air-conditioned restaurants and the malls where the city hides from the heat. Little charm, plenty of comfort. One climate rule for the street stalls: eat where you can see the turnover, and drink more water than you think you need.
