I hope I get the chance to stay there again in the future. We stayed in a charming traditionally decorated room with a veranda in the spectacular grounds of the colonial castle building which was built in 1580! But you can get to stay in the castle too! The grounds are spectacular. The pool is beautiful and clean. We enjoyed swimming in it during a storm! And watching the animals from the pool: multiple birds of all sorts, iguanas, a peacock, ants beetles etc…
Ok. So I’m probably going to say the same thing as every other one-starer, ‘cause they speak facts. We got there at night, starving only to find that the restaurant, looking as dingy as a basement, was closed until the morning. No dinner. The reception room look strange - as if it wasn’t even part of the building…oh wait - it wasn’t. With only one desk to go to, we walked towards it, only to find one staff worker for the whole hotel. He showed us inside a strange looking place he said was made in the early 1500s but it was only till the mid-late 1500s did the Spanish start building and conquer…

Planning your trip to Valladolid
When to go
November to February is the weather you want: 28-32°C by day, evenings that ask for sleeves, cenotes with no queue if you arrive early. It is also the busiest stretch — year-end, Holy Week, the Chichén Itzá equinoxes — when the courtyard houses in the centre fill up. The odd norte brings two grey, windy days; they pass fast.
March to June the heat takes charge: 38-40°C at midday and humidity that gives nothing back. It is not undoable, just a different schedule — ruins and cenotes early, pool from one to five, town again at dusk. In exchange, that is when our scans found the softest rates in an already cheap city.
June to October it rains: short, violent afternoon downpours that leave the cenotes fuller and the countryside green. Inland, hurricane season reads as rain rather than swell, though a distant storm can cost you two days. Bring repellent — once everything is wet and green, the mosquitoes turn up at sunset.
Given a free choice, November and February are the rounded months. And a warning about the equinox: the serpent's descent is real, but you watch it among thousands of people with every hotel in town full and dear. If you are here for the ruins rather than the rite, shift your dates a week.
Getting there and around
ADO is the natural way in: roughly 2 hours from Cancún and 2 from Mérida, in the order of MX$200-350 depending on class and how early you buy, with departures all day. There are direct runs from Tulum and Playa del Carmen too. The terminal sits right in the centre — travelling light, you walk to your hotel.
The Tren Maya stops here as well, but the station is out of town: budget a taxi on arrival and confirm timetables before you build a plan around it, since they are still settling. By car, the toll highway from Cancún or Mérida is fast and boringly good; tolls add several hundred pesos each way.
The free 180 is the alternative: slower, thick with speed bumps and villages — Temozón, Uayma, Pisté — and far more interesting if you are not in a hurry. In town the grid is narrow and one-way; ask whether your hotel has its own parking before you circle the blocks with a loaded car.
Inside Valladolid you need nothing: twenty minutes crosses the centre on foot and Zací is three blocks off the square. For Dzitnup, Oxman, Suytun or Ek Balam there are bikes, taxis and colectivo vans leaving from the streets by the market; a town taxi runs about MX$30-60, a little more out to the nearer cenotes.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The blocks around the main square are the obvious first choice: townhouses with a courtyard, a plunge pool and breakfast under the arches, with the market, San Servacio and the colectivo stops on foot. This is where the typical 2026 rate of about US$70 lives. The cost is noise — music, bells and traffic until late, so ask for an inside room.
The Calzada de los Frailes and the Sisal barrio are the quiet version of the same charm: cobbles, coloured façades and the San Bernardino convent at the end, ten minutes from the square. Little happens there at night, which is exactly the point; if you eat late, you will be walking back from the centre.
Five or six blocks out toward Santa Ana, Santa Lucía, La Candelaria or San Juan changes the whole budget: this is where the guesthouses and hostels behind that from US$17 figure sit. They are residential, calm and fine to walk. Get two things in writing: air conditioning in the room, not a fan, and hot water.
With a car, the hotels out by the highway exits trade the evening stroll for parking and a proper pool at less money. By profile: first visit, beside the square; couples, a Calzada townhouse; tight budget, the barrios; and if Chichén Itzá is the whole point, a night in Pisté, two kilometres from the gate, buys the opening without a dawn drive.
Eating and going out
Valladolid holds its own corner of Yucatecan cooking: lomitos in tomato sauce, smoked longaniza, turkey escabeche oriental, relleno negro. Cochinita is a morning affair and it runs out; at midday the set lunch rules, in the order of MX$80-150 in 2025, and market breakfast comes in around MX$50-100.
The square's terraces and the pretty places along the Calzada de los Frailes charge postcard prices — they are fine, but two or three blocks further out the same food costs half. At night the square fills with stalls: marquesitas, corn, esquites, mamey ice cream. That is the town's social scene, and it costs coins.
Nightlife is not what this place does: a handful of bars and cantinas, kitchens closing around ten. The real evening plan is the video mapping on the convent façade — most nights, but check the time — then a loop around the square. It walks safely; carry cash, since many cenotes and stalls take nothing else.

Small means the townhouses have six or eight rooms and sell out even when the town does not. Outside the big dates a week's notice does it; for equinoxes, Holy Week and year-end, a month.
Check before you pay: air conditioning in your room, whether the pool is for swimming or just cooling off, which floor you are on — top floors hold the day's heat — and whether there is parking. Ask too whether the room faces the street: the square is loud, and in the courtyards someone else's breakfast starts early.

Two seasonal notes. The Candelaria fair, late January into early February, fills the city with visitors from the region: festive, loud, hotels taken. And when sargassum hits the Caribbean, people move inland — summer weekends here get tighter than the calendar would lead you to expect.
