The hotel has a very nice view of a beautiful waterfall which you can enjoy while eating your breakfast/dinner. Our room was very large with a nice bed and good amenities... a little bit cold although you can get an electric heater for free from reception. Overall, we had a good experience and the only disappointment was the lack of selection at breakfast despite saying it was included in the price,;you can only choose the Americano - it would be 5/5 if there was a better selection here.

Planning your trip to Valle De Bravo
When to go
October and November are the rounded months: the reservoir full after the rains, the forest green, days between 20 and 24°C. October also brings the Festival de las Almas, with music and theatre around town, and hotels fill weeks in advance. Book early or shift your trip by a week and enjoy the same weather without the crowd.
From December to March the air is dry and the skies clear — prime paragliding season, and monarch butterfly season at the Piedra Herrada sanctuary, about forty minutes away. Nights catch people out: at 1,800 metres they drop to five or six degrees, and plenty of rooms have no heating. Ask about a fireplace or extra blankets before booking.
March to May sees the water level fall, the landscape turn dry and dusty, and strong afternoon winds arrive. The town itself is as handsome as ever, so the trip still works — but if your plan involves boats, sailing or a lake view from bed, this is the weakest window of the year.
June to September means rain most afternoons: clear mornings, mist on the ridges, hard showers from four o'clock. The forest is at its best and midweek rates are the year's softest, though paragliding flights get cancelled often and dirt tracks turn slippery. Bring a rain shell and shoes with grip; wet cobbles are treacherous.
Getting there and around
From Mexico City it is two and a half to three hours via Toluca and the toll road, traffic depending. The honest caveat: Friday afternoons and Sunday between four and eight, the highway becomes a queue. Leave very early, leave late, or better still arrive on a Thursday and drive home on a Monday.
Buses run from Terminal Poniente (Observatorio) in about three hours for roughly MX$250-350, with connections through Toluca as a fallback. Toluca airport is an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by road; from Mexico City's airport, budget three and a half hours door to door with a transfer.
In town you walk almost everywhere, but the Centro is built on a slope and the gradients are no joke — from the dock up to the plaza is a genuine climb. Local taxis charge around MX$50-70 inside the Centro and MX$120-150 out to Avándaro. Ride-hailing apps are patchy; save a taxi stand's number.
A car unlocks Avándaro, the Velo de Novia waterfall and the butterfly sanctuaries, but costs you in parking. On weekends the Centro saturates and private lots charge by the hour. If your hotel includes a space, treat that as a real tie-breaker rather than a footnote.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro is the obvious first-visit choice: small hotels in tiled houses, many with a courtyard, minutes from the municipal market, the crafts market and the waterfront. It is also where bar noise and car horns run late on Saturdays. Ask for a room facing the patio rather than the street if you sleep lightly.
The lanes climbing towards La Peña and the Cerro de la Cruz give the best lake views and more calm, in exchange for uphill walks. With heavy luggage or small children you will feel every metre. Locals solve it the sensible way: walk down, take a taxi back up, it costs very little.
Avándaro is a different proposition — forest, big houses, a golf course, hotels with spas. You sleep beautifully and dine expensively, and without a car every move is a fare. It makes sense for a two- or three-night decompression where going into town is optional rather than the point.
Along the road towards Colorines and in the villages on the way in — San Gabriel Ixtla, Santa María Pipioltepec — you find cheaper beds, almost always requiring a car. Keep in mind that we scanned only 11 hotels with a real price here: formal supply is thin, and much of the local stock is rental houses.
Eating and going out
Trout is the local dish by tradition, farmed nearby and served fried, in garlic or wrapped and steamed; nearly every kitchen in town has it. The food stalls inside the municipal market are the cheap, reliable option, with a full lunch running roughly MX$120-180. On Sundays, early barbacoa is a local ritual worth setting an alarm for.
At weekends the restaurants in the Centro and Avándaro fill between two and five in the afternoon and again from nine to eleven at night. Reserve if a table with a view matters, and expect a wait if you turn up unplanned. Midweek the reverse applies — several places simply close Monday and Tuesday.
Nightlife concentrates on the streets around the plaza: live music on Fridays and Saturdays, early closing the rest of the week. This is not a late-night town. People get up early to fly, to be on the water, or to reach a butterfly sanctuary before the day warms up and the crowds arrive.
Street snacks — garnachas, esquites, morning tamales — and the bakeries in the Centro cover breakfast and light dinners for a fraction of what a view-facing restaurant charges. If your hotel rate excludes breakfast, that is the sensible workaround rather than paying hotel prices twice a day.
Booking well
The most useful rule here is about the calendar, not the neighbourhood: the same room costs noticeably less on a Tuesday than on a Saturday. For Friday and Saturday nights between October and March, plus long weekends, Holy Week and the year-end holidays, book four to six weeks out and expect two-night minimums. With supply this thin, last-minute cancellations are rare and prices do not soften as the date approaches — if anything the cheapest rooms vanish first.
Before paying, confirm three concrete things: whether the lake view is genuine or distant, whether parking is included, and how many steps or how much slope lies between the street and your room. In winter also ask about heating or a fireplace; in the rainy months, about roofs and terraces that stay dry.
Two practical notes. The drive from Toluca is straightforward by day, but the secondary roads to the sanctuaries are unlit, so plan to be back before dark. On the dock boats, insist on life jackets; and if you are flying tandem paragliding, book with an established operator and accept that stable weather, not your schedule, decides.
