The person who helped us with our luggage, Guillermo, gave us great suggestions on where to go and have dinner. Cleaning staff was very professional, front desk receptionists were always nice and friendly. We had drinks and heard a wonderful singer at the bar our last night. She was amazing! Overall, great experience.
We booked this hotel because it looked very nice, except that it has elevators that go very slowly and can only carry 4 people. We didn't know that 4 year old children have to wear swim diapers for the pool and that women have to wear a blouse or special clothing to enter the pool. Let's hope that your meal is pleasant and that the customer service is the same. Whether or not customers want to come back depends on it.
The hotel has a great view from the top of the building where the pool is located, the room was clean with plenty of space. The restaurant offered a cheap buffet every morning. This place has a great location in general. The only thing I didn't like was that the pillows were too thin and not comfortable.
Planning your trip to Veracruz
When to go
November to February belongs to the norte: two- or three-day gales that shut the port, drop the thermometer to 15-18°C and empty the malecón. It is odd weather for a tropical city and plenty of travellers like it — walking is pleasant, sleeping is better and prices sag. The trade-off is blunt: reef boats stay tied up, the water turns murky and the beach is a write-off.
March to early May is the classic good stretch: rising heat, kinder sea, long days and terrace nights. Holy Week fills the seafront with Mexican holidaymakers and lifts rates for a week or two. From June to October the real mugginess arrives, with afternoon downpours and Gulf cyclone season; July and August mean crowded sand despite the sticky air.
Carnaval is effectively a different city: parades along the boulevard, comparsas, closed streets, minimum stays and multiplied rates. If that is why you are coming, book three or four months out and accept the noise; if it is not, dodge those nine nights entirely. The dates shift with Lent, so confirm them before buying flights or bus tickets.
Getting there and around
The airport sits inland on the road toward Xalapa: 25-35 minutes to the Centro or Boca del Río, with an authorised taxi around MX$300-450 at 2025 prices and app rides a touch cheaper. Air service is modest, mostly Mexico City and Monterrey, which is why a lot of visitors end up arriving overland for less money.
The bus terminal on Díaz Mirón, minutes from the zócalo, is the port's real hub: Mexico City in 5-6 hours for roughly MX$600-800, Xalapa in about two hours for far less, plus constant departures to Puebla, Córdoba and Orizaba. Frequencies are high all day, so last-minute improvisation actually works here.
In town, the Centro Histórico is walkable end to end. Buses run the seafront between the Centro and Boca del Río every few minutes for a few tens of pesos, taking 20-30 minutes that stretch badly at rush hour; apps charge in the order of MX$70-130. Rent a car only if you plan to leave the city — downtown parking is a competitive sport.
For day trips, La Antigua and the Zempoala ruins lie about an hour north; Tlacotalpan, with its heritage streets and river, roughly two hours south; Mandinga and Alvarado are the traditional seafood outing; and Xalapa is worth a full day for its anthropology museum. All are doable by bus or van from the terminal, though slower than the map suggests.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro Histórico holds the veteran hotels: older buildings around the zócalo, the portales and the malecón, many with a courtyard and ageing air conditioning, at prices that explain our 2026 floor — from US$21 a night, with a citywide typical rate of about US$57. Ask for an interior room and check that the AC is a recent unit: humidity punishes badly ventilated rooms.
The middle stretch of coast — Villa del Mar, Costa Verde, Costa de Oro, Mocambo — lines up hotels of an earlier boom along Boulevard Ávila Camacho, near the aquarium, with buses every couple of minutes in both directions. It is the compromise zone: beach across the road, moderate prices, cheerful Mexican family atmosphere, though brown sand and traffic noise come with it.
Boca del Río is the modern half: glass towers, business chains, shopping plazas and a tidier shoreline that improves as you go south. It makes sense for work, for predictable rooms or for travelling with kids, but evenings are quiet — for danzón, portal seafood and port atmosphere you will be getting into a car or a bus.
By profile: first visit and hungry for the city, stay walking distance from the zócalo; couple on a tight budget, a Centro veteran with new air conditioning; beach family, the middle seafront or Boca del Río with a pool; work trip or long stay, the Boca del Río towers, close to offices, malls and restaurants that stay open late.
Eating and going out
Breakfast here means picadas, gorditas and empanadas in fondas and markets — the Mercado Hidalgo is the fastest education — for roughly MX$60-120 at 2025 prices, plus the café lechero from the portales, ordered by clinking your glass, for a few tens of pesos. It is a cheap, unposed ritual, taken standing up among people heading to work.
The serious eating is from the sea: pescado a la veracruzana, arroz a la tumbada, crab chilpachole, cocktails, garlic shrimp. On the boulevard a main course runs about MX$180-320; in the palapas at Mandinga or the market fondas, considerably less. Toritos — creamy peanut or soursop cane drinks — are the local liquid dessert and hit harder than they taste.
Nights start late and happen outdoors. There is danzón in the zócalo several evenings a week, marimba almost always, and music under the portales until the players give out; the malecón fills with strollers and ice-cream stands, while the boulevard bars toward Boca del Río carry the small hours. You can have a great evening spending almost nothing.
The honest security note: the state has a rough reputation and the port is not the problem area, but apply normal judgement — busy zócalo and malecón yes, dark empty stretches of beach at three in the morning no. Take a taxi or an app back if you are sleeping far from the Centro, and skip long seafront walks at night.
