Xalapa is a hill city best taken on foot, which is why the Centro is where you want to sleep. Around Parque Juárez, the cathedral and calle Enríquez sits almost all of the city's lodging, steps from the Callejón del Diamante, the museums, the coffee houses and the start of the Paseo de los Lagos; everything else is a ten-peso bus away. Las Ánimas and Plaza Américas, to the north, make sense on a work trip or with a car. Our 2026 scans logged 15 hotels with a real price: from US$28 a night and a typical rate of about US$52. The honest caveat is the weather: fog, fine drizzle and steep streets most of the year.

Which area should I stay in?
The Centro Histórico, around Parque Juárez and calle Enríquez. That is where the hotels cluster and where you can walk to the museums, the cafés and the Callejón del Diamante. If you are driving or here for work, the Las Ánimas and Plaza Américas side of town has newer hotels with parking and meeting rooms, but none of the old-city character.
What do hotels cost, and when is it cheaper?
Our 2026 scans found 15 hotels with a real price: from US$28 a night, with a typical from-rate of about US$52. Ordinary rainy-season weeks between June and October are the softest. Rates firm up over Holy Week, Mexican long weekends, the year-end holidays, and whenever the university fills the city with conferences or graduation ceremonies.
How do I get there and get around without a car?
Almost everyone arrives by bus: four and a half to five hours from Mexico City TAPO, ninety minutes to two hours from the port of Veracruz, about three from Puebla. El Lencero airport handles very few flights. In town, city buses run around MX$10-12, a taxi across the centre roughly MX$50-70, and ride apps work fine.
Does it really drizzle all the time?
More than on the coast, yes. Locals call it chipichipi, a fine drizzle that can sit over the city for a couple of days. June to October is wettest, and from November to February the nortes bring fog and damp cold. That rain is why everything is green. March to May is the clearest window; pack a light rain shell.
