About staying in Zacatlan
Zacatlán sits on the lip of a ravine, and that one fact shapes the whole stay: cold air, fog rolling up in the afternoon, and a town small enough to walk end to end. The Centro, around the Parque Central with its floral clock, holds nearly all the lodging worth booking — small guesthouses and ten-room hotels a few blocks from the Barranca de los Jilgueros lookout. Our 2026 scans logged only 3 hotels with a real price — a thin sample, because family posadas and forest cabins dominate here — from US$51 a night and a typical rate of about US$62. The honest caveat: weekends fill up with visitors from Puebla and Mexico City, and the nights are genuinely cold.

Which part of Zacatlán should I stay in?
The Centro, around the Parque Central. It is effectively the only walkable zone, with the market, the restaurants and the Barranca de los Jilgueros lookout a few blocks away. A room facing the ravine is the one worth asking for. Cabins out on the Chignahuapan road or towards San Miguel Tenango only make sense if you are driving.
When are rooms cheapest?
Midweek, without exception. Zacatlán runs on weekend trippers from Puebla and Mexico City, so Friday to Sunday rates rise and the good Centro rooms go first. The real peaks are the mid-August apple fair, Holy Week, Day of the Dead and the year-end holidays. Our 2026 scans found rooms from US$51 and a typical from-price of about US$62.
How do I get there and get around?
Buses leave frequently from Puebla's CAPU terminal: two and a half to three hours, tickets of the order of MX$200-280. From Mexico City reckon on four hours via Tulancingo and Huauchinango. The town itself is walkable but steep. For the Valle de Piedras Encimadas or the waterfalls you need a car, a taxi hired by the hour, or a tour leaving from the Parque Central.
Do hotels here have heating?
Almost none do. At over 2,000 metres nights drop to 5-10°C and brush freezing in winter, so ask in advance about extra blankets, reliable hot water and windows that actually shut. Cabins with a fireplace are the comfortable exception. If you feel the cold, an inner room stays warmer than the balcony with the ravine view.
