4.0212 reviewsThis hotel was exactly what we were looking for in Mexico. Don't be mistaken by the term, "Budget Hotel". It is very clean, the beds are remarkably comfortable, the ceiling fan kept the room cool, no need for a pool with the ocean a block away, it is close to all the shops and restaurants and it is situated on a very quiet street. The family that runs the hotel are wonderful people and made us feel "at home". We would definitely stay there again !
Pros: Clean big rooms, nice local family, friendly and budget friendly (400 pesos per night for a double room.) They also had a free water fill station which was awesome to refill our personal water bottles with safe drinking water. Cons: Wifi was intermittent and much harder to connect further back in the building. The bed we had was a bit older and was definitely feeling its age. The sheets and bedding were a little loose and frazzled as well. The bathroom could definitely use some updates. Would stay again. Was easy and one of the more quiet places I have stayed in Mexico. Sorry.....No star for this hotel....Claudia, the manager lets her long term drug using clients run roughshod over everyone else. I witnessed an older couple have their door kicked in by a maniac having a bad hallucinatory trip of some kind and nothing was done about it....not to mention the arguing at night on the patio when they get high.. ...I left immediately for fear that I would be next.
Planning your trip to Barra De Navidad
When to go
High season runs December to April: days of 28-31°C, warm water, dry skies and a town full of Canadians and Americans who settle in for weeks. That is when the tiny room stock actually runs out. January and February are the tightest months, and Holy Week adds families from Guadalajara, Colima and Manzanillo.
May and June are the smart window: the sea is warm, the rains have not properly started, the winter crowd has gone home and rates soften. It is hot and humid, around 32°C with heavy air, but shade at midday, a pool and a fan handle it.
July to October brings rain, mostly late afternoon or overnight, and everything around the lagoon turns green. It is also cyclone season, peaking from August into early October, and this coast has taken serious hits. Not a reason to cancel, but a reason to book flexible rates and watch the forecast.
September is the flattest month of the year: some small hotels and kitchens close or cut their hours. November, by contrast, is a rounded month — clean sea, few people and prices that have not yet gone winter.
Getting there and around
Manzanillo airport (ZLO, Playa de Oro) is the natural way in, 35-45 minutes down Highway 200, with domestic flights and winter charters from Canada and the US. A taxi into town runs about MX$700-900 depending on the hour; agree the fare before you get in.
From Guadalajara it is four and a half to five hours, either on the toll road towards Colima and then the 200, or the slower hill route via Autlán. Direct buses run several times a day, plus services from Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, roughly five hours. Avoid Highway 200 at night: cattle, unpainted topes, no lighting.
You don't need a car in town. Everything fits inside a twenty-minute walk, from Avenida Veracruz to the malecón. Vans and local buses run to Melaque every few minutes for around MX$15-25, and a taxi is on the order of MX$80-120.
The pangas at the pier are genuine public transport, crossing to Isla Navidad, the marina and Colimilla in minutes for roughly MX$50-100 per person. They run into the evening, but if you are eating on the far side, fix the return with your boatman first.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Avenida Veracruz is the spine of the town: small hotels, posadas and apartments above the shops, steps from the plaza and the church. It is the practical, cheaper choice, with the ordinary noise of a working street. Parallel Legazpi is the sea side, with rooms facing the beach and the malecón.
The lagoon side sleeps quieter and gets the better sunsets, though there is less to choose from and more mosquitoes at dusk. Straight across the water, Isla Navidad is already Colima: marina, golf, a different price bracket, and linked to the town only by boat.
Melaque is the real fallback when Barra fills up: a wider bay, gentler water for swimming, more bungalows and family-run hotels, a less international feel. Further north on the 200 lie Cuastecomate, Boca de Iguanas and Tenacatita, but out there you need a car for everything.

Eating and going out
The food is fish and shellfish, and it is good: pescado sarandeado over coals, ceviche, aguachile, garlic shrimp, oysters from the lagoon. Beach palapas serve you with your feet almost in the sand; the kitchens along Veracruz are cheaper and quicker. A set lunch runs about MX$120-180, a seafood plate MX$220-350.
The classic afternoon is crossing by panga to Colimilla, on the far side of the lagoon, to eat shrimp looking at the mangroves. You go and come back by boat, so leave while there is still light. In town, the sunset belongs to the malecón or any terrace facing the water.
Nightlife is modest, and that suits the place: a handful of bars on Veracruz and the malecón, live music in winter, people sitting out in the plaza. Holy Week and New Year turn the volume up; the rest of the year things are winding down by eleven.
Booking well
With five hotels carrying a public rate, the rule is blunt: for December to April and Holy Week, book months ahead, not weeks. Outside that window you can usually turn up and ask. Remember our scan figures are from-prices — in high season expect to pay well above the typical rate of around US$104.
Before you pay, confirm three things: real air conditioning rather than a fan, hot water, and whether the room faces the street or the sea. Legazpi and the malecón get bar noise late in season; the lagoon edge gets mosquitoes. Ask for recent photos if the place is small and family-run.
Carry cash. There are ATMs, but they run dry on long weekends, and plenty of kitchens and boatmen take no cards. Travelling between August and October, choose cancellable rates. The town itself is calm; the real hazards here are the shore break and Highway 200 after dark, not crime.
