I would give it 3 stars, but unfortunately the hotel has degraded a bit: 1. The quality of the food at the restaurant is poor. Not what it used to be. I was told the restaurants are now operated by an independent company. Breakfast buffet is no longer included. The drinks at the pool are very bad (quality and quantity) and expensive. Not a good combination for regular customers. 2. The hotel is “hosting” several cats (I saw at least 10 kittens and 2 or 3 adult cats). The cats are not feed at all, there is no drinking water for the poor creatures (Veracruz’s weather is very hot). Once the pool…
Top of the line. Very nice old colonial style. We went again just a few days ago. They have been working on the hotel and it looks very nice. It is as clean as any hotel I've ever been in. We look forward to going there again soon.
Planning your trip to Boca Del Rio
When to go
Weather matters more here than the tourist calendar. From October to March the nortes blow in: cold Gulf winds that drop the thermometer to 15-18°C, grey out the sky and churn the sea for two or three days, occasionally closing the port. It is not beach weather, but the city keeps working and midweek rates soften noticeably.
April to September belongs to humid heat: 32-35°C that feels hotter, sticky nights, laundry that never quite dries. From June to October, afternoon downpours and hurricane season arrive, which here usually means intense rain and a lost day rather than disaster. Air conditioning is not a preference, it is equipment.
The price peaks are predictable: Veracruz Carnival, Holy Week, July and August, long weekends and the year-end holidays. On those dates the boulevard fills with cars from central Mexico and the seafront hotels sell out weeks ahead.
The sweet spots? Late April and May, before the serious rain, and November between nortes: bearable heat, usable beach, ordinary prices. If you are travelling for work, check that your dates do not collide with a large trade fair at the World Trade Center.
Getting there and around
Veracruz international airport, out at Las Bajadas, sits roughly 20 km from the hotel strip: 25-40 minutes depending on traffic. The authorised taxi to Mocambo runs around MX$350-450, and ride-hailing apps operate normally, usually a bit cheaper. Flights are mostly domestic, with Mexico City and Monterrey as the main gateways.
By bus, almost everything terminates at the Veracruz station on Díaz Mirón, with frequent departures from Mexico City (about six hours), Puebla (four) and Xalapa (two). From the terminal to Boca del Río is a 20-30 minute taxi, in the order of MX$120-180 depending on hour and traffic.
Driving, the 150D toll road from Puebla is comfortable and direct, though the tolls are not cheap. Inside the conurbation, Boulevard Ávila Camacho is the single spine, and it clogs at rush hour, on Friday afternoons and on summer Sundays when everyone heads for the sand.
To move around, city buses run the boulevard between central Veracruz and Boca for MX$12-15: slow and hot, but constant. Walking works within your own zone, not between zones — it is about 10 km of shadeless boulevard from one main square to the other.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Playa Mocambo and Costa de Oro, along the boulevard, form the classic hotel strip: seafront towers, pools, event halls, and several properties that are due a refit. This is where the typical rate of about US$80 from our 2026 scans makes most sense, and where you reach the sand without crossing traffic.
The Las Américas area, around the World Trade Center and the malls, is business-hotel country: predictable rooms, breakfast included, parking, air conditioning that works. There is no beach on foot, but there are restaurants, ATMs and cheap taxis. For a conference or a work trip it is the logical base.
Old Boca del Río, by the mouth of the Jamapa, is the real neighbourhood: the parish church, a small plaza, the row of seafood places on the riverfront walk. Hotel supply is thin and plain, closer to the US$28 end we recorded than to the median, and it suits travellers who want price and local life.
An honest alternative is sleeping in central Veracruz, 8-10 km away. The arcaded plaza, the aquarium and the malecón give you more evening atmosphere and more characterful buildings, in exchange for a poorer beach and more noise. If your trip is cultural and culinary, it may serve you better than Boca.
Eating and going out
This is fish territory. The local repertoire is arroz a la tumbada, red snapper Veracruz-style, garlic shrimp, seafood cocktails and shrimp empanadas. The row of marisquerías on the Boca riverfront is the obvious move: packed at lunchtime, especially on Sundays, and far more enjoyable on a weekday afternoon.
The trip out to Mandinga, on the lagoon some 20 minutes south, is worth it: fried mojarra, freshwater prawns, family-run places over the water. It is a midday plan, not an evening one. If you go by taxi, agree the round-trip fare first, or rent a car for the day.
Breakfast means picadas, gordas, volovanes and café lechero — the ritual of tapping the glass for more hot milk, best performed under the arcades on the Veracruz main square. Realistic budget: set lunch MX$120-180, a serious seafood main MX$250-350, beer MX$40-60.
At night, life splits between the boulevard bars, the mall zone and central Veracruz, where danzón fills Parque Zamora on Sundays. It is a loud, cheerful conurbation; if you are a light sleeper, ask for an inside room and one far from the event halls.

The sample is small and worth saying out loud: in 2026 we scanned 14 hotels with a real price in Boca del Río, from US$28 a night with a typical figure of about US$80. In practice, the low end is a simple inland room, and the typical one is a beach or business hotel with a pool and working air conditioning.
Book months ahead for Carnival and Holy Week: those are the two dates when the boulevard sells out and prices stop resembling anything in our scans. Midweek, a congress at the World Trade Center can fill the Las Américas hotels overnight, so business travellers should not leave the room until last.
Before paying, confirm three things: that "beachfront" does not mean crossing the boulevard, that the air conditioning genuinely works — salt air and humidity are hard on units — and that there is parking if you are driving. Pool photographs age faster than pools do.
Practicalities: carry cash for the smaller seafood joints, use registered taxis or an app after dark, and skip empty beaches and side streets late at night. The tourist strip is calm enough, but this is still a large port city, and it asks for ordinary common sense.
