About staying in Bocoyna
Bocoyna is the municipality, but Creel is the town you actually book. At 2,340 metres, ringed by pine forest and weathered rock, Creel is the road-and-rail gateway to the Sierra Tarahumara: a Chepe train station and the base for Lake Arareko, the Valle de los Hongos, the Cusárare waterfall and the canyon lookouts at Divisadero. Bocoyna town itself and San Juanito, to the north, are apple and sawmill towns with practical rather than touristic lodging. Our 2026 scans found only three hotels with a real price: from US$90 a night and a typical rate of about US$114, a small sample skewed towards mountain lodges. The cold is part of the deal — always ask about heating.

Where should I stay in Bocoyna?
In Creel, on Avenida López Mateos or a couple of streets off the plaza: restaurants, Rarámuri craft stalls, tour desks and the train station are all on foot. If you want silence and a fireplace, the cabins along the road to Lake Arareko work well, but you need a car or a hotel transfer. Bocoyna town and San Juanito are for work trips, not sightseeing.
When is it cheapest, and when does it fill up?
Rates and occupancy climb over Holy Week, in July and August, at Christmas, and on any weekend with snow in the forecast. The slackest stretch is usually April and May, dry and dusty, plus weekdays in the rainy season. Our 2026 scans logged just three hotels: from US$90 with a typical rate of about US$114; cheaper cabins exist in town but rarely appear online.
How do I get there and get around without a car?
From Chihuahua city it is roughly 250 km and four and a half hours by road, with several buses a day from the terminal, on the order of MX$400-500 per person in 2025. The alternative is the Chepe train from Los Mochis or El Fuerte, running on fixed days. Creel is walkable end to end; for the surroundings, take the morning tour vans or hire a taxi by the hour.
Can I see the Copper Canyon from Creel?
Yes. Divisadero, the classic rim lookout over the Barrancas del Cobre, sits about 50 km away: an hour and a half on paved road, an easy day return, or by train if the schedule lines up. Going down to the canyon floor — the Recohuata springs, for instance — is another matter: dirt road, a local guide advisable, and a full day set aside.
