At 2,340 metres, ringed by pine forest and weathered rock, Creel is the road-and-rail gateway to the Sierra Tarahumara: a Chepe train station and the base for Lake Arareko, the Valle de los Hongos, the Cusárare waterfall and the canyon lookouts at Divisadero. Bocoyna town itself and San Juanito, to the north, are apple and sawmill towns with practical rather than touristic lodging. This was a well run hotel with great staff and service. A little bit rustic but very clean and comfortable. Decent beds, lots of hot water and very good morning breakfast. Very close to the Centro and Chepe station. A great place to stay for a night or two if you are doing a self guided tour of the CC. Best place to arrange all the top Copper Canyon sights as there are several of the too tour companies within a block of the Centro and train station.
A nice hotel, but they need to improve the ventilation of the wood fire stove in the cabin. After two days in the cabin, my mother in law was having difficulty breathing. The owner was kind enough to accommodate us in another room with a gas furnace. Thanks to the different room, the rest of our stay was pleasant.
Planning your trip to Bocoyna
When to go
October and November are the rounded months: clean skies, days of 18-20°C, nights near freezing and yellow cottonwoods along the river. No rain, firm roads, and the sierra looking exactly as advertised. Book ahead anyway — Creel's inventory is tiny and a Mexican long weekend empties it within hours.
December to February is genuinely cold: sub-zero nights, near-daily frost and occasional snowfalls that fill the town with families driving up from Chihuahua. It is beautiful and demanding in equal measure. Ask precisely how the room is heated — wood stove, gas heater or central heating — and whether hot water is reliable at six in the morning.
July to September brings afternoon storms. Days hover around 22-25°C, the forest is green and the waterfalls actually run; the trade-off is plans cut short after four o'clock. Holy Week is its own category: Rarámuri celebrations fill the villages and occupancy spikes even though the weather is still dry and windy.
April and May are the weak months: dry, dusty, windy and prone to forest fires, with a brown landscape and smoke hazing the lookouts. In exchange, demand is at its lowest of the year. If you come then, favour the train and the rock valleys over the waterfalls, which shrink to a trickle.
Getting there and around
Creel lies some 250 km from Chihuahua city: four and a half hours by road via Cuauhtémoc and La Junta, with the last stretch full of curves. Buses run several times a day from the terminal, on the order of MX$400-500 per person in 2025, with services continuing to San Juanito and Guachochi.
The other way in is the train. Creel is a Chepe station for both the Express and the regional service, which climb up from Los Mochis and El Fuerte across the canyon. It does not run daily but on fixed days, so buy well ahead and build your nights around the timetable rather than the reverse.
With a car, tarmac reaches Divisadero, Cusárare and San Juanito; almost everything else is dirt that turns awkward in rain or ice. Fill the tank in Creel, where there is a station, and do not drive the sierra after dark: no lighting, loose cattle, and long waits for any kind of help.
The town takes twenty minutes to cross on foot. For the surroundings — Lake Arareko, the mushroom and frog rock valleys, Cusárare — the tour vans leaving the main avenue early are the practical option, or a taxi hired by the hour. Cruising taxis are scarce; agreeing a whole circuit up front costs less.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Central Creel, along López Mateos and around the plaza, is the obvious choice: restaurants, Rarámuri craft shops, tour desks and the station all within a short walk. The trade-off is proximity to the tracks and to early-morning van traffic. If you sleep lightly, ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street.
On the edges of town and along the road towards Lake Arareko and Cusárare you'll find cabins and lodges among the pines, with fireplaces and real silence. You rest better, but you depend on a car or a hotel transfer, and dinner means driving back into town. Check in advance whether the place serves meals.
San Juanito, half an hour north, and Bocoyna town are a different proposition: sawmill and apple-orchard settlements with simple lodging aimed at working travellers. They make sense if you are here on business, for the harvest or for Holy Week festivities. If you came for the canyon, sleep in Creel instead.

Eating and going out
Eating happens on López Mateos and the streets around the plaza: machaca with eggs, discada, brothy soups, oven-baked gorditas and farmed trout from the sierra. These are small places with short menus and early closing times. A full meal runs roughly MX$150-250 per person in 2025, breakfast considerably less.
Eat breakfast early, because tours leave between eight and nine and the valleys and waterfalls have almost no services beyond the odd craft stall. Carry water, some fruit and small notes for the access fees charged on communal land, which are collected in cash, in pesos, at the gate.
Nightlife is minimal and worth knowing about in advance: a couple of bars, kitchens that shut early, and a town that goes quiet by ten. In winter the evening plan is a fireplace, a blanket and a startling sky. Buy crafts and apples straight from Rarámuri families, and ask before photographing anyone.
Booking well
Book weeks ahead for Holy Week, July and August, Christmas and any weekend with snow forecast. With inventory this thin, Creel fills all at once, and what is left tends to be expensive rooms or beds half an hour out of town with dinner left to chance.
Before paying, confirm three things in writing: how the room is heated in winter, whether hot water is dependable before dawn, and whether breakfast is included. Many hotels also arrange transfers to Divisadero and Recohuata; asking the price at booking usually beats arranging it on the morning itself.
Bring cash. There are few ATMs in town and they run dry over long weekends, and not every hotel or guide takes cards. Mobile coverage works in Creel and vanishes the moment you drop into the valleys, so download maps offline and fix meeting points and times before you set off.
One honest caveat: the Sierra Tarahumara has seen episodes of violence tied to organised crime, and Bocoyna is not exempt. Creel is used to visitors and daytime tourist routes are routine, but travel in daylight, stay on main roads, avoid exploring dirt tracks on your own, and hire local guides for any descent into the canyon.
