Bucerias for hotel guests
Highway 200 cuts it in two. The pools were great, and the staff was exceptionally friendly, making our experience truly memorable. While some reviews mentioned a rocky beach, we found ample space to relax and enjoy it.
Good all inclusive hotel, there’s a space for only adults. The pool is cool and the many dining options, however you must reserve in all of them. They have a small club on site and a late bar. Everybody speaks English and are very attentive. The snacks aren’t always available and the ice cream is overly sweet. The rooms need renovation and more wine options in the restaurants, they sell better option for bottles. This hotel is a luxury hotel but it's starting to not have its luxury feel Secrets was known for. Not sure if Hyatt purchasing it has anything to do with it. Upon check in, for some reason, the minibar in the room was out of the cabinet and placed to the side, taking up space and looking out of place. The room floor was dirty when we checked in. We received a call asking if everything was okay, and I told them it wasn't (dirty floor and minibar). The girl said she would check on it and call us back. Planning your trip to Bucerias
When to go
High season runs from mid-November to April: dry skies, days of 28-31°C, mild evenings and a town full of Canadians and Americans who stay for months. The spikes are Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, when Mexican families fill the sand and hotel rates stop being negotiable. Book those dates far ahead or avoid them.
May and early June are the sweet spot: no rain yet, warm water, half the crowd. From July to October humidity settles in and afternoon storms arrive, usually short and often overnight. It is also hurricane season, and the surf can turn nasty. September is the dead month, when kitchens close for weeks at a time.
Humpback whales cross the bay from December to March and can be seen from the sand if you are patient. The honest trade-off: summer humidity is punishing and air conditioning stops being optional, while winter buys perfect weather at winter prices, in a town where half the conversations happen in English.
Getting there and around
Puerto Vallarta airport (PVR) is about 20 km south, 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic on Highway 200. The official airport taxi is expensive for the distance, of the order of MX$600-800 in 2025. Ride apps work in the area but cannot collect you inside the terminal; you walk over the pedestrian bridge to the highway side.
Green-and-white local buses run along the highway every few minutes for roughly MX$20-40, south to Puerto Vallarta and north to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Punta de Mita and Sayulita. Slow, no air conditioning, no timetable worth the name — and they cover almost everything you need without renting a car.
In town you walk: the malecón to the plaza is ten minutes over cobbles and uneven kerbs. The real hazard is not crime, it is crossing the federal highway on foot after dark, so use the footbridge or the lights. A car only pays off for repeated day trips north. One detail: Bahía de Banderas keeps Jalisco time, so no clock change from Vallarta.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre, on the sea side of the highway, is the obvious choice. Between Avenida México, the plaza and the galleries on Lázaro Cárdenas you have restaurants, sand and some life within a few blocks, and this is where the town's handful of real hotels sit. Live music until midnight is part of the deal.
North along the beach, low-rise condo buildings with pools take over and the sand runs straight for kilometres. You sleep in silence and wake facing the water, but dinner means a twenty-minute walk or a taxi. It suits people staying weeks rather than nights.
East of Highway 200, in Fraccionamiento Bucerías and the colonias behind it, is the everyday town: cheaper, more Mexican, no beach on foot. Reasonable if price rules and you accept crossing the highway every time you want the sea.
Nearby, Nuevo Vallarta and Flamingos to the south are all-inclusive country, while La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, ten minutes north, trades walkable beach for a marina. Bucerías sits between them, which is essentially the argument for it.
Eating and going out
The regional dish is pescado zarandeado, a whole fish butterflied and grilled over coals, ordered for two or three. Add oysters, aguachile and shrimp. At the palapas on the sand you pay for the view: budget MX$350-500 a head with beer. Two blocks inland the same fish costs noticeably less.
Cheap eating lives on Avenida México and the streets around it: taquerías, morning birria, neighbourhood seafood counters, comida corrida of the order of MX$120-180. The resident foreign community explains the suspicious number of pizzerias, specialty coffee and English menus; they coexist with the corner stands without much friction.
Nightlife means a long dinner and live music in a bar; by one in the morning the town has closed. In high season there is a Thursday gallery walk along Lázaro Cárdenas, and the Sunday market at the La Cruz marina is worth the short hop north. For clubs it is Puerto Vallarta, and a taxi back for MX$500 or so.
Booking well
Our 2026 scans found just 5 hotels in Bucerías with a real price: from US$77 a night, with a median from-price of the order of US$202. The sample is small because the town's inventory is mostly condos and houses. In practice that means thin hotel competition on peak dates and rooms that disappear early.
Book December to April and Holy Week months ahead. In high season many places impose minimum stays — three nights, five, sometimes a week — and quote monthly rates that change the arithmetic entirely if you can stay three weeks or more.
Check on a map what "beachfront" actually means. Plenty of listings sit on the far side of Highway 200, six or eight blocks from the sand, and in July that walk matters. Confirm working air conditioning, insect screens, and whether the pool belongs to the building or to your unit.
From August to October, take the cancellable rate: a Pacific storm rarely lands squarely here, but it scrambles flights and closes beaches for days. Ask what the lodging tax and any service charges add before you compare two prices.
