About staying in El Cuyo
El Cuyo is a sand-street fishing village you reach on purpose, never on the way to somewhere else. It sits at the eastern end of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, with a wide beach of shallow, calm water, steady wind for kitesurfers from November to April, and flamingos and crocodiles in the estuary behind town. Lodging is scarce: our 2026 scans found only 3 hotels with a real price, from US$54 a night and a typical rate of about US$75. Most of the rest are small guesthouses. Come with cash, repellent and no hurry — there is no reliable ATM, no supermarket and no nightlife.

Where should I stay in El Cuyo?
On the beachfront if you want breeze, a terrace and the water at your door: it is the priciest and most obvious choice. In the village grid, around the small park and the lighthouse, rooms cost less and you are among the shops, the tortillería and the fish coming off the boats, two or three streets from the sand. Everything is walkable.
What do hotels cost, and when is it cheaper?
Our 2026 scans logged prices from US$54 a night and a typical rate of about US$75 — but only three hotels had a real price, so treat that as a small sample. December to April is dearest, peaking at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. September and October are the slow, rainy, cheapest months.
How do I get there and get around without a car?
By bus or shared van from Tizimín, the regional hub: several departures a day, roughly two hours, on the order of MX$80-100. Tizimín connects to Valladolid, Mérida and Cancún. Driving, it is about three and a half hours from Cancún and close to four from Mérida. In the village you walk, or rent a bicycle or golf cart.
Do I really need to bring cash?
Yes, and plenty. The village ATM exists but does not always work or always hold notes, and many guesthouses, kitchens and bike rentals take pesos in cash only. Withdraw in Tizimín or Valladolid before you drive in. There is also no big supermarket and no fuel on the final stretch — fill up in Colonia Yucatán or Tizimín.
