We attempted to book through an ap, which indicated that there were several rooms still available, but we wanted to see the rooms and location first. When we arrived the front desk person said that those rooms were actually not available but allowed us to look at the rooftop area, which felt very cramped and unsafe. We noticed some construction next door as well. We were not allowed to view any rooms. All of this and the unwelcoming nature of the staff helped us to decide against booking for the next night, which was all that they offered.
Amazing experience staying at Mero Mero hotel! the staff was super friendly, the rooms where very comfortable. The view and the pool at the rooftop are incredible, and you can cook or order food and hang out in the common area. Its very close to the beach! the food in the restaurant at the lobby is also a great option! I would definitely stay there again.
Planning your trip to El Cuyo
When to go
The dry, windy season runs November to April: days of 26-30°C, clean skies and the wind that brings the kitesurfers, strongest from January to April. It is also high season, peaking at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. The nortes of December and January can hand you two or three grey days with choppy water and cool mornings.
May and June are the shoulder: humid heat of 33-35°C, flat water at the shoreline and far fewer people around. Turtle nesting season begins and runs into September; there are clear rules about lights and walking the beach after dark, and they are worth following to the letter.
July to October brings rain, thicker humidity and an active hurricane season. September and October are the slowest, cheapest months, and also the worst for mosquitoes and sandflies at dusk. Some businesses shut for a few weeks of maintenance, so message ahead before you commit to the trip.
The honest point: El Cuyo does not change character much with the calendar. It is a quiet village with barely any nightlife and an enormous beach. Come in winter if you want wind, in May or October if you want still water and low prices — and pack repellent either way.
Getting there and around
There is no airport and no direct flight; you arrive by road. From Cancún it is about three and a half hours via Nuevo Xcan and Colonia Yucatán; from Mérida, closer to four via Tizimín. The last 40 kilometres are a narrow straight line through the reserve's mangrove, with no fuel, no shops and patchy phone signal.
Avoid that stretch after dark: animals cross it, there is no lighting and nowhere to stop if something goes wrong. Fill the tank in Tizimín or Colonia Yucatán and carry water. A normal rental car is fine; loose sand only shows up on a few streets close to the beach.
Without a car, the route is a bus or shared van from Tizimín, which works as the regional hub: several runs a day, roughly two hours, on the order of MX$80-100. Tizimín links to Valladolid, Mérida and Cancún, but budget a full door-to-door travel day and aim to arrive in daylight.
In the village everything is on foot: the grid is only a few streets deep and the beach is two or three of them away. For longer trips, bicycles and golf carts rent for something like MX$200-400 a day. Boats into the estuary, for flamingos and crocodiles, are arranged with local fishermen.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The beachfront is the obvious zone and the priciest: small hotels and guesthouses on the sand, constant breeze, sea-facing terraces and a direct launch for a kite. The trade-off is distance — depending how far from the centre you land, it is a 5 to 15 minute walk to the restaurants and shops.
The village grid, around the park, the church and the lighthouse, holds the cheapest rooms and the everyday life: tortillería, corner shops, fish straight off the boats. You sleep further from the sound of the sea, with more heat and more mosquitoes, but a few minutes from everything that matters.
The further you go along the beach, east or west, the quieter it gets and the more you depend on a bicycle. Several properties run on solar panels and their own pumps, so water pressure, hot water and overnight air conditioning can be variable. Ask before you book, not after you arrive.

Eating and going out
You eat fish and seafood: ceviche, whole fried fish, octopus in season, plain good tacos. A main runs roughly MX$180-280 and a cold beer MX$40-60. There are also kitchens run by foreigners who came and stayed, turning out decent pasta and pizza. The village is small but eats better than you would expect.
Nightlife is minimal and you should know that going in: a couple of bars, palapas serving until sunset, kitchens closing around nine or ten. In low season fewer places open and some take a day off each week. Early dinner is the local habit, not a restriction imposed by your hotel.
If you plan to cook, there are small grocery shops, a tortillería and fish direct from the boats, but no large supermarket and little fresh produce. With a specific diet, or fussy kids, do the serious shopping in Tizimín or Valladolid on the way and bring a cooler.
Booking well
With supply this thin, book early: from December to April, at Holy Week and over long weekends, the good rooms go weeks ahead. Outside those dates you will find availability, and rates sit nearer the bottom of what we saw — from something like US$54 a night in our 2026 scans.
Ask the concrete questions in writing: air conditioning or fan, screens on the windows, hot water, whether there is a generator or solar system, whether breakfast is included, how many blocks to the beach. In a village like this, those answers shape the stay far more than any star rating.
Bring cash. The village ATM exists but does not always work or hold notes, and several guesthouses and restaurants take pesos in cash only, or ask for a bank transfer as deposit. Withdraw in Tizimín or Valladolid before driving in, and confirm the cancellation policy and your arrival time in writing.
Last piece of advice: do not come for one night. The journey is long and the place only makes sense on the second or third day, once you know what time the wind drops and who fries the fish best. Three or four nights is the stay El Cuyo deserves.
