The room was great except the large crack in the floor, which made us fearful of using the in room jacuzzi. The tile in the bathroom was very dated and could use updating. Lime green with a darker green trim. The restaurant had great food, but the regular visits from raccoons and iguanas scared a lot of guests. The staff say it is their environment and we are visitors in it, so they let them wander.
I almost didn’t stay at this hotel because of the bad reviews, but I’m glad I gave it a chance. Overall, it’s a beautiful hotel located right in front of the calmest and most stunning ocean view. The staff were very friendly and courteous, which made my stay even better. I absolutely loved the island! One thing to note—it is a bit far from downtown. If I come back, I might choose a hotel that's closer to the city center. We ended up walking a lot, which I didn’t really mind, but taking a taxi every day would definitely add up. Trying to be fair, but this is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Las Nubes de Holbox is old, dirty, and seriously understaffed. The photos on their website are extremely misleading, clearly taken many years ago. The hotel no longer looks anything like what is advertised. Their so-called beach club is not actually on the beach. You have to cross a swampy puddle that smells terrible and is full of mosquitoes. Planning your trip to Isla Holbox
When to go
December to April is the weather everyone comes for: dry, cool at night, calm sea. It is also the expensive stretch, peaking at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. The caveat is the nortes — cold fronts between November and February that bring wind, chop up the crossing and can knock the ferry out for half a day.
June to September belongs to the whale sharks: dawn departures, open sea, tours running somewhere around MX$2,500-3,500 per person at 2025 prices, sightings never guaranteed. These are also the bioluminescence months on moonless nights — and the hottest, most humid ones, with afternoon rain and hurricane season squarely overhead.
September and October sit at the bottom of the calendar: the island empties, some businesses close for maintenance, rates drop. In exchange you get rain, puddled sand streets and sandflies multiplying at dusk. If you want balance, the second half of November and the first days of December usually deliver good weather before prices climb.
On sargassum: Holbox faces the Gulf rather than the open Caribbean and generally escapes the brown tides that hammer Tulum and Playa del Carmen. It is not immune — seagrass and algae wash up, especially after a norte — but the real variable here is different: the water is shallow and full of sandbanks, and when wind stirs it, the postcard turquoise goes.
Getting there and around
The trip comes in two legs and both deserve margin. From Cancún, airport or downtown, shared vans, line buses and private transfers run to Chiquilá; from there the ferry crosses in about 25 minutes, leaving frequently from dawn until shortly before half past nine at night. If your flight lands after five in the afternoon, sleep in Cancún or Chiquilá and cross in the morning.
Driving? The car does not come with you. Chiquilá has guarded lots at roughly MX$100-150 a night at 2025 prices, and that is where it belongs, not on the street. Small planes also fly from Cancún to the island's airstrip — fast, expensive and strict about luggage.
On the island you walk. Pier to plaza is five minutes; cart taxis charge fixed fares by stretch, in the order of MX$50-100 within the village and considerably more out to Punta Cocos or the eastern end. A bicycle at roughly MX$150-250 a day is the best money you will spend, though soft sand forces you off it. After dark there are no streetlights — carry a torch. Punta Mosquito is a long hour's beach walk, best at low tide.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre — sand streets around the plaza and the pier — is where the low prices live: the small posadas holding up the US$38 end of our scan, plus the restaurants, shops, the few ATMs and the noise, from late music on the main street to generators when the power drops. Everything is walkable, which counts for a lot here.
The village beachfront, where Calle Tiburón Ballena runs out into the sand, is the middle ground: beach hotels with a pool and palapas five minutes from dinner. This is roughly where the typical rate of about US$92 from our 2026 scans lands. The clear advantage is independence — you never need a cart.
West toward Punta Cocos the beach widens and the noise disappears: small boutique hotels, hammocks over the water, the island's best sunset, the lagoon close by. You pay for that calm in money and in logistics — dinner out means a cart there and back, and carts thin out after midnight.
The eastern stretch toward Punta Mosquito is the wildest: kilometres of sand, sandbars surfacing with the tide, birds. It is also the furthest from everything and the most exposed to mosquitoes, with mangrove behind it. By profile: first visit or tight budget, the centre; honeymoon or full disconnection, west; long walks and silence, east; with kids, the village beachfront.
Eating and going out
You eat fish: ceviche, octopus, garlic shrimp, whatever came in, grilled. Lobster is the local trophy but it has a closed season — March through June it should not be on your plate, and if someone offers it "fresh" then, be sceptical. A seafood main runs MX$250-450 at 2025 prices; taquerías and loncherías around the plaza feed you for MX$80-150.
Everything arrives by ferry and the bill shows it: food and drink cost more than in Valladolid or Mérida — a bar beer in the order of MX$50-80 — and value is uneven. Cash rules, too: many places take no cards or add a surcharge, and the few ATMs run dry on long weekends. Bring pesos from the mainland.
Nights are short and low-key: live music on the main street, beach bars with tables in the sand, and not much after one in the morning. The better night out is the other one — walking east, away from the lights, on a moonless summer night to look for bioluminescence. Bring repellent and long sleeves; at dusk the sandflies collect their fee.

For Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and Mexican long weekends, book two or three months out; for whale shark season, one; in September and October you can nearly improvise.
The good hotels have six, ten, fifteen rooms. The one you saw in photos sells out even when beds remain elsewhere on the island — if you liked it, close it. Check three things before paying: real air conditioning rather than a fan, screens or mosquito nets, and what happens in a blackout — outages occur and not every hotel has a generator.
Ask about payment: several small properties want the balance in cash on arrival or add a card surcharge, which changes how many pesos you carry over. If you stay west or east, confirm whether the hotel meets you at the pier — dragging suitcases through soft sand for twenty minutes is a poor start.
Two last thoughts. One: do not come for a single night — the journey eats half a day each way, and three nights is the sensible minimum.
