About staying in Loreto
Loreto is a small town facing a very big sea, and that shapes where you sleep. The historic centre, around the 1697 mission and the Plaza Cívica, holds the posadas and small hotels, minutes on foot from the malecón and the boat operators. Nopoló, eight kilometres south, is the resort strip beside the golf course: quiet, comfortable and awkward without a car. Our 2026 scans found only 8 hotels with a real price: from US$112 a night, with a typical from-price of about US$141. Inventory is thin and it sells out, so book weeks ahead, especially between January and March.

Where should I stay in Loreto?
In the historic centre, unless you came for the golf. Around the Plaza Cívica and the pedestrianised Calle Salvatierra you walk to the mission, the malecón, the restaurants and the boat operators in ten minutes flat. Nopoló, eight kilometres south, gives you a pool and a long beach but leaves you dependent on a car or taxis for every meal out.
When is Loreto cheapest to sleep in?
June to October, when temperatures push past 35°C and hurricane season is running: that is the slack period and rates show it. The dearest, fullest stretch is January to March, driven by whale season and long-stay winter visitors, plus the year-end holidays and Holy Week. May and November are a fair compromise between weather and price.
How do I get in and around without a car?
Fly: the airport sits about seven kilometres from town, with year-round flights from Tijuana and Mexico City and winter service from Los Angeles and Calgary; a taxi into the centre runs around MX$250-350. Overland, buses come up Highway 1 from La Paz in roughly five hours. In town everything is walkable — a car is only for San Javier and the southern beaches.
Is it worth coming for the whales and the islands?
Yes, with clear expectations. The islands of Bahía de Loreto National Park — Coronado, Carmen, Danzante — are day trips by small boat from the pier, with snorkelling and sea lion colonies. Grey whales run January to March, but on the Pacific side: that is a long full-day excursion across the peninsula. And winter nortes can cancel boat departures at short notice.
