About staying in Mazamitla
Mazamitla is the pine-forest town Guadalajara escapes to at weekends, and that one fact shapes how you should book. At 2,200 metres in the Sierra del Tigre, the centre is tiny: the church of San Cristóbal with its wooden tower, the main square, a few streets of cafés, bars and cheese shops. Most of the lodging is cabins scattered through the woods, several kilometres out, where a car stops being optional. Where should I stay in Mazamitla?
In the centre, around the square and the church, if you arrive without a car or want dinner and drinks on foot. In the forest, out towards Los Cazos and the El Salto waterfall, if you want a cabin with a fireplace and you are travelling as a group. That is what most people come for, but it means driving and a very quiet night.
When is it cheapest, and when does it fill up?
The town runs on days of the week more than seasons. Monday to Thursday there is space, quiet and better rates; Saturdays, long weekends, Holy Week, summer and the last week of December sell out and push prices up. Our 2026 scans logged only 4 hotels with a price, from US$80 and a typical rate of around US$93.
How do I get there, and do I need a car?
Guadalajara is about 125 km away: roughly two and a half hours by bus from the old central station, with tickets in the MX$250-300 range. The terminal sits close to the square. Without a car you can live perfectly well inside town, but for cabins, viewpoints and the waterfall you will depend on local taxis, roughly MX$50-100 in town and more into the forest.
How cold does it get? Do rooms have heating?
Cold enough to matter. Nights call for a sweater year-round, and from December to February pre-dawn temperatures drop to 0-5°C. Many cabins handle it with a fireplace and blankets rather than central heating, and some small hotels in the centre have no heating at all. Ask in advance about firewood, hot water and whether the room has a heater.
