4.64156 reviewsI get the rustic vibe which is lovely, but the wood creaks really bad and bends as if it were to almost break. The toilet paper dispenser broke. The view is very nice though and the people are helpful.
Maybe THE best location in Mazamitla. Roomy cabins and a huge property. Friendly staff and on-site room service. Controlled access for increased safety. Kid-friendly but also secluded romantic couple cabins.
Really enjoyed the rustic, well kept cabin and lush landscape on terraced hillside. Hotel provided wood and starter for a nice fire (bring matches or lighter). We cooked a couple small meals in our little kitchen and I remembered to bring a small coffee pot too. Mazamitla it’s a fun, beautiful place to visit.
Planning your trip to Mazamitla
When to go
At 2,200 metres the weather has nothing to do with the rest of Jalisco. Days sit around 20-25°C for most of the year and evenings always call for a jacket. From December to February the early hours drop to 0-5°C, with frost on the high pastures. That is fireplace and hot punch season, and for many visitors it is precisely the point.
From June to October it rains most days, usually in the afternoon. The forest looks extraordinary and fog rolls through the streets, but the dirt tracks out to the cabins turn to mud and the walk down to the El Salto waterfall gets slippery. Bring shoes you do not mind ruining and do not count on clear afternoons.
Demand matters more than weather. Saturdays, long weekends, Holy Week, summer, the July patron-saint festivities and the last week of December fill the town and lift rates. Monday to Thursday, by contrast, Mazamitla is close to empty: better prices and real quiet, with several restaurants shut or keeping short hours.
Getting there and around
Guadalajara is about 125 km away, two to two and a half hours by car. The usual route runs along the Chapala lakeshore towards Tuxcueca and climbs into the mountains; the alternative takes the Colima motorway and turns off through Tamazula. The final stretches are tight switchbacks, so avoid driving them after dark or in thick fog.
Buses leave frequently from Guadalajara's old central station and take two and a half to three hours, with tickets of the order of MX$250-300. Mazamitla's terminal is a few blocks from the square, so if you sleep in the centre you can walk in with your bag. From Guadalajara airport, allow close to three hours.
In town everything is on foot — five minutes from the square to any restaurant. The cabins are another matter, between 4 and 10 km out, with sections of dirt road. A local taxi runs around MX$50-100 within town and more into the forest, and it pays to arrange your night-time return in advance. Quad bikes and horses are an outing, not transport.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre, around the square and the church of San Cristóbal, is the practical choice: small hotels, restaurants, sweet shops and cheese counters, all walkable. The trade-off is noise — on Saturdays there is live music and people in the plaza until late. Ask for an interior room if you sleep lightly, and confirm parking before you arrive.
The forest is where the cabins are: the road out to Los Cazos and the El Salto waterfall, and the slopes towards the Sierra del Tigre. Fireplace, terrace, grill and pines, which is what most people come for, especially in groups or with children. It requires a car, patience with unpaved roads, and accepting that nothing is open nearby after nine.
Along the access highway and the upper streets there are hotels with their own parking and less charm, useful if you arrive late or are passing through towards Tamazula or the lakeshore. And if Mazamitla is full on a long weekend, sleeping in Concepción de Buenos Aires or by Lake Chapala, an hour away, is a realistic fallback.

Eating and going out
The food is mountain food, built for cold: birria, pozole, carne en su jugo, trout from the sierra farms, clay-pot stews and coffee brewed with piloncillo. Hot fruit punch, spiked or not, is sold around the square, and the shops in the centre sell cheese, cream and local bread. This is dairy country and the menus show it.
Prices are small-town, not beach-resort: a set lunch runs roughly MX$120-180, a main course in a tourist-facing restaurant MX$200-280, coffee and a pastry around MX$60. At weekends the places on the square fill up at lunchtime and waiting half an hour for a table is normal rather than exceptional.
Going out is a Saturday affair: bars around the plaza with live music, more boisterous than polished. From Sunday to Thursday the town shuts early and many kitchens close by nine. If you are sleeping in a cabin, stock up first at the market and shops in the centre — near the woods there is nothing but what you brought, and driving down for firewood at midnight is no fun.
Booking well
The local rule: for a Saturday, a long weekend, Holy Week or the last week of December, book weeks ahead. The inventory is small, it sells out, and rates on those dates bear no resemblance to an ordinary Tuesday. Midweek you can improvise, turn up without a reservation and sometimes negotiate at the desk.
With cabins, read the fine print: two-night minimums at weekends, deposits in advance, unforgiving cancellation terms and charges per extra person. Ask whether firewood is included, whether there is any heat source beyond the fireplace, and how the hot water works. In January those answers matter far more than the decor.
Check the exact location on a map before paying. A listing that says ten minutes from the centre can mean eight kilometres of dirt track that becomes twenty minutes in the rain. Ask too whether a low-clearance car makes it up, and about mobile coverage: in several parts of the forest there is simply no signal.
Carry cash. There are ATMs in the centre, but they run dry over long weekends, and plenty of small businesses, taxis and stalls do not take cards. If you drive, confirm the hotel has enclosed parking: in high season the streets around the square jam up, and circling with luggage at ten at night is a poor start.
