It depends on your errand. If you are crossing on foot, downtown near the DeConcini gate and Avenida Obregón saves you a dawn taxi, though it is loud and the buildings are old. If you are visiting the industrial parks, the hotels along Periférico Luis Donaldo Colosio and towards Mariposa give you parking and quick access, but nothing at all is walkable.
When are rooms cheaper?
The business calendar rules here, not the tourist one. Monday to Thursday the hotels fill with plant staff and visiting suppliers, and rates firm up; Friday to Sunday they ease off. December is awkward because of the heavy southbound traffic of families crossing home. Our 2026 scans logged prices from US$90 with a typical rate around US$98, across very thin supply.
How do I get there and get around?
Many travellers fly into Tucson, about 100 km north, leave the car on the US side and walk across at DeConcini. From the south, federal highway 15 from Hermosillo is roughly three hours, with frequent buses into the terminal on the periférico. In town, taxis and ride apps run about MX$80-150 for short hops; the city climbs a canyon, so walking tires you fast.
Do I need a permit to drive south from here?
If you stay inside Sonora on highway 15, there is the Sonora-only vehicle permit, issued at the Banjercito module at kilometre 21 south of the city. Go beyond the state and you need the full temporary import permit with its deposit. Keep your stamped FMM and passport within reach: there are checkpoints on the road south.
