It depends on the trip. The Centro Histórico if you want the museums, the clock tower and the pasty shops on foot — hotels there are few and plain, often in old buildings, but nothing needs a taxi. Zona Plateada, along Boulevard Felipe Ángeles, if you're here for work or driving: chains, parking, restaurants, ten to fifteen minutes from the centre. By the bus terminal only if you're passing through.
When are rooms cheapest?
There's no classic tourist high season. Demand is business demand, so Monday to Thursday nights are the tight ones and weekends usually ease off — the reverse of a beach town. How do I get there and get around without a car?
By coach from Mexico City's Central del Norte: roughly 95 km, ninety minutes, departures every few minutes, tickets on the order of MX$150-200. From Felipe Ángeles airport (AIFA) a direct bus takes a little over an hour. In town, the Tuzobús runs north-south in its own lane for under MX$10, and short taxi hops cost around MX$60-80.
Do hotels have heating?
Plenty don't. The city sits at 2,400 metres and overnight lows hover near zero from December to February, but the local habit is a heavy blanket rather than a radiator. Ask before you book, especially at small places downtown, and confirm the hot water has real pressure. An interior room at seven on a January morning is genuinely cold.
