People sleep here for work — Pemex, contractors, suppliers — or because it is the natural stop between Tuxpan, Papantla and the Costa Esmeralda, less than an hour from the ruins of El Tajín. Supply is thin and business-oriented, so midweek fills up fast. And it is hot and humid most of the year: insist on air conditioning, not a fan.

Which part of town should I stay in?
Along Boulevard Adolfo Ruiz Cortines if you are here on business or driving: that is where the newer hotels sit, with parking and a quick exit to the highway. The centre is cheaper and close to cheap kitchens, banks and the bus terminal, but you trade that for traffic noise and a street that stays busy late. Ask for an interior room.
When are rooms cheapest?
Industry sets the calendar, not tourism. Midweek brings crews, engineers and suppliers, and rates hold firm; weekends usually soften. March is awkward because of the Cumbre Tajín festival in nearby Papantla, and Holy Week and summer add pressure when the Costa Esmeralda overflows inland. How do I get here and get around?
By bus, mostly: five to six hours from Mexico City on Highway 130 via Tulancingo, with frequent first-class departures, plus direct runs from Xalapa, Veracruz, Tuxpan and Pachuca. El Tajín airport, out in Tihuatlán, has had patchy commercial service in recent years, so confirm before you plan around it. In town, taxis do everything, roughly 40 to 60 pesos for short hops.
Is it a good base for El Tajín and Papantla?
It works. Papantla is about 45 minutes away by shared van or bus, with departures every few minutes, and the archaeological site is another 15 minutes past it. That said, if El Tajín is your only goal, sleeping in Papantla is nicer and closer, though there are fewer rooms. Poza Rica wins on bus connections, choice and price.
