About staying in Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is less a town than a string of beaches with separate personalities, and picking the wrong one means a taxi for everything. Zicatela is the big wave, the bars and the roar of the surf; La Punta, at the south end, means beginner waves, hostels and dirt streets; Carrizalillo and the Rinconada hold the hotels with pools and a view; the Centro, around the Adoquín, is where the practical business happens. Our 2026 scans logged 20 hotels with a real price: from US$47 a night and a typical from-price of around US$102. The warning that matters: you do not swim at Zicatela, the currents are serious.

Which area should I stay in?
It depends on your week. Zicatela for bars and surf-watching on your doorstep; La Punta for cheap, barefoot and learnable waves; Carrizalillo or the Rinconada if swimming and a pool with a view come first; the Centro if you want the market, banks and the boats off Bahía Principal. Without a car, the zone shapes everything.
When is it cheapest and most expensive?
The spikes are the last week of December, the first of January and Holy Week, with a smaller lift in July and August. September and October are the softest, deep in the rainy season: genuine discounts and rooms available at a few days' notice. November and May sit nicely between decent weather and decent prices.
How do I get there and get around?
PXM airport is about four kilometres from the centre, with daily flights from Mexico City and Oaxaca City. Overland, the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla motorway brought Oaxaca City down to roughly three and a half to four hours. In town, short taxi rides run in the order of MX$50-100 and shared pickups work the coast road for small change.
Which beaches are safe for swimming?
Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are the sheltered coves — calm water, a little snorkelling. Zicatela and Bacocho have heavy rip currents and waves that break almost onto dry sand; you watch those, you do not swim them. Playa Marinero sits in between and varies by day. Ask at your hotel how the sea is running.
