The town amounts to two avenues, a row of seafood palapas and a great many bungalows with kitchenettes. The only thing i didn't like was the lack of restaurants (a la cart for dinner). Servicio al huésped fue un placer hablar con ustedes! One of the biggest & tallest hotels for the local area, good service, buffets available nearly all day, nice pool, many activities every day. Great access to the beach, decent rooms with air conditioning.
We booked a last-minute stay at La Marina to surprise friends who were staying at Los Cocos. All of the staff were very friendly, and we felt very welcome. On our first night we had a problem with the A/C and our room was moved to one of the end rooms with the bay window overlooking the ocean. The location is great, and we enjoyed walking around the town. We would definitely return to La Marina again!!
Planning your trip to Rincon De Guayabitos
When to go
November to April is the pick of the weather: 28-31°C days, mild evenings, a settled sea and very little rain. It is also when long-stay winter visitors arrive, mostly into bungalows and RV parks rather than hotels. Humpback whales pass through the bay from December to March, and small boats go out to look for them.
The domestic peaks feel different. Holy Week, the last week of December and the whole of August change the town's scale: the beach fills palapa by palapa, the music goes up, and rooms sell out. Travel then and you should book months ahead and expect the upper end of the range we recorded.
June to October is the rainy half of the year: humid heat, afternoon storms, brilliantly green hills and bathwater sea that can turn murky after heavy rain. September and October are the emptiest and cheapest months, with real cyclone risk. Between August and November there are turtle hatchling releases on beaches nearby.
Getting there and around
Puerto Vallarta's airport (PVR) is the practical gateway: about 90 km up Federal Highway 200, 75 to 90 minutes depending on traffic through Bucerías and Sayulita. Tepic lies a similar distance to the north and its airport (TPQ) has far fewer flights — worth it only if the schedule happens to suit you.
Without a car there are two routes. The comfortable one is a private transfer, on the order of MX$1,800-2,500 from PVR. The cheap one is a taxi to Puerto Vallarta's bus terminal, then a coastal bus toward La Peñita de Jaltemba — roughly two hours for MX$150-250. Many services drop you on the highway rather than at the beach, so budget for a short taxi.
In the bay itself you walk. Guayabitos is flat and compact. For La Peñita or Los Ayala, shared vans run along the highway every few minutes for MX$15-30, and a short local taxi ride costs around MX$50-100. There are no meters, so settle the fare before you set off.
A car only earns its keep if you want day trips to Chacala, Lo de Marcos, San Francisco or Sayulita. Avoid Highway 200 after dark: two lanes, cattle, unpainted speed bumps, long unlit stretches. And in high season parking near the beach is a contest, so ask whether your hotel has a space.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Guayabitos beachfront is the obvious choice and the one our scans mostly cover: mid-sized hotels with pools, terraces facing the bay, sand a few steps away. What you gain in position you pay for in noise during busy weeks, because the palapas and the boats start early. Ask for an inward-facing room if you sleep lightly.
The streets and turnings that drop from Avenida del Sol Nuevo toward the water are bungalow territory — kitchenettes, ceiling fans, space for a family, good for a week or more. Buying fish in La Peñita and cooking cuts the bill sharply. Many of these places never appear on the big booking sites; outside peak dates they are taken by phone or on arrival.
La Peñita de Jaltemba, 3 km north, is the everyday town: market, ATMs, shops, a weekly street market, lower prices, less weekend crowd. Its beach is more open and has more swell, so it suits swimmers more than toddlers. It is the sensible base for a long, low-budget stay if you don't mind riding the van.
Los Ayala, to the south, is a smaller cove with a family feel, restaurants on the sand and very few rooms. Choose it for quiet and accept depending on a shared van for everything else. Chacala, to the north, is smaller again and pricier — a different kind of trip, not a substitute for Guayabitos.
Eating and going out
Eating here means seafood under a palapa with your feet in the sand: whole grilled fish to share, shrimp, oysters, aguachile, ceviche. Expect something in the range of MX$200-350 per person with a beer, more if you order fish by the kilo. Ask the price per kilo before it reaches the table — that is normal practice, not rudeness.
Along Avenida del Sol Nuevo you'll find taquerías, plain seafood counters, pizza, a bakery and set lunches for MX$100-150. This is honest beach-town cooking with no gastronomic pretension. If you want chef-driven food, that is Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta, not here.
Thursday's street market in La Peñita is the standing outing of the week: fruit, vegetables, fish, clothes, crafts at market prices. With a kitchenette in the room, that one trip covers several meals.
Nights are quiet. Music in the palapas until sunset, a bar or two, karaoke in season, and not much beyond that; out of season plenty of places shut early or shut entirely. Carry cash — there are ATMs in La Peñita and a few in Guayabitos, but small businesses often take nothing else.
Booking well
Read our numbers carefully, because there are few of them: in 2026 we scanned six hotels with a real price, from US$157 a night and typically around US$175. That sample leans toward beachfront properties with pools, which are the ones listed online. Cheaper stock exists — family hotels and bungalows — but it moves by phone, WhatsApp and front desk.
Dates matter more than category here. For Holy Week, year-end and August, book months ahead and get written confirmation; in those weeks the town runs close to full and there is nothing to negotiate. For long winter stays, write early and ask about weekly or monthly rates, which usually exist even when they aren't advertised.
Before you pay, check four concrete things: whether air conditioning is included or billed separately, what the kitchenette actually contains, how close the nearest music palapa is, and whether parking exists. 'Sea view' can mean a balcony over the bay or a sliver between two buildings, so ask for photos of the specific room.
Travelling in low season — May-June or September-October — you can afford to arrive and compare in person: occupancy is low and several places will move on price on the spot. Either way, bring pesos in cash, since deposits and negotiated rates rarely go through a card machine.
