A well staffed and beautiful hotel. The bar tender is amazingly talented and friendly. The restaurant is very nice good selection for breakfast too. The lobby and the rooms are the highlight of the resort…very beautiful. Some nice restaurants within walking distance too.
Very nice room layout. We had a suite with two bedrooms and 2 baths. Very disappointed with breakfast. We paid extra for breakfast bit all that includes is cold food. There is extra cost for hot breakfast. Our room did not include a cooktop, and we were expecting one based on photos. To make it worse, the refrigerator did not work and maintenance did not fix it even though we asked.
Planning your trip to Saltillo
When to go
The sweet spots are the shoulder seasons: late March to May and September into early November, with days of 25-28°C, cool nights and dry skies. Sitting at about 1,600 m, Saltillo never gets Monterrey's heat — even in June and July, when afternoons reach 32-34°C, the temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down.
Summer brings some afternoon rain, but not much: this is semi-desert, and the water is more welcome than inconvenient. August is fair month, which means more movement in town and hotels in higher demand. If you plan to walk in the Sierra de Zapalinamé or drive up to Arteaga, summer and autumn are the green months.
Winter is the honest caveat: from December to February northers blow through, nights drop below freezing and some years bring snow or ice on the highways. The upside is calendar-shaped — the Christmas break and Holy Week empty the business city and rates ease, exactly when the rest of the country climbs.
Getting there and around
Plan de Guadalupe airport sits in Ramos Arizpe, about 20 minutes from the centre, but handles few flights. Most visitors arrive via Monterrey: roughly 90 km of toll highway, about an hour and fifteen by car, with tolls on the order of MX$200, plus frequent coaches in both directions.
Buses between Monterrey and Saltillo leave every half hour, with fares of roughly MX$200-280 depending on the line, and there are direct services from Monterrey airport. The bus terminal is well away from the centre: a taxi or app ride runs about MX$80-130, and it is worth booking through an app rather than hailing at the kerb.
Around town, ride apps are reliable and short hops cost roughly MX$70-120; city buses are barely over MX$10 but require knowing the routes. Rent a car if your plans involve industrial parks, Arteaga or Parras. One firm warning: avoid the old free road to Monterrey, the Los Chorros grade, at night, in rain or in fog.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro Histórico makes most sense if you are here to look around: the Santiago cathedral with its Churrigueresque facade, the Plaza de Armas, the sarape museum and the Museo de las Aves de México are all on foot, with the Alameda Zaragoza ten minutes away. Supply is limited and uneven, and the area goes quiet after nine.
Bulevar Venustiano Carranza holds the bulk of the beds: business-oriented chain hotels with parking, breakfast and a gym, near Galerías Saltillo and the restaurants that stay open late. It is neither pretty nor walkable in a touristic sense, but it is comfortable and well connected if you drive or use apps.
North of the city, Ramos Arizpe and the industrial corridor offer functional hotels built for people visiting the car plants and the airport: expensive Monday to Thursday, soft at weekends. Sleep there only if your work is there, because nothing is within walking distance and every dinner becomes a drive.
For something different, Arteaga and the Sierra de Arteaga, 25-30 minutes out, have mountain lodges and cabins among apple orchards. That sits outside our city scan and is useless as a work base, but it is the better idea for a weekend if you have your own car.
Eating and going out
Eat your main meal at midday like everyone else: a set lunch in the centre's fondas runs roughly MX$120-180, and the Mercado Juárez does it cheaper. Look for asado de puerco in red chile, weekend menudo, oven-baked gorditas, and pan de pulque, which here is an institution rather than a novelty for visitors.
Nightlife splits between the cantinas and cafés of the centre, which close early midweek, and the restaurants and bars along Carranza and the northern strip, packed with industry people on Thursday and Friday. Sundays, half the city shuts: eat early or ask at your hotel desk before setting out.
For a longer afternoon, the Museo del Desierto explains Coahuila better than any brochure, with dinosaur fossils found in the state. And a little over two hours west, Parras de la Fuente and its cellars make up the oldest wine outing in Mexico — doable as a day trip, far better with a night.
Booking well
Here the working calendar rules, not the tourist one. Monday to Thursday the hotels on Carranza and in Ramos Arizpe fill with suppliers, technicians and auditors, and rates rise; Friday to Sunday they fall. If your dates are flexible, arrive Thursday and stay through the weekend — it is the simplest way to pay less.
