Great central location. The rooftop pool was awesome, rooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. The location does mean that it can get kind of loud at night due to the proximity to the nightlife, but the hotel provided ear plugs. Definitely would recommend and would stay there again.

Planning your trip to Sayulita
When to go
The dry season runs November to April: days of 28-31°C, mild nights, sea around 24-26°C and reliably clear skies. It is also when the town fills and rates climb, spiking hard at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, when Sayulita stops feeling like a village and becomes a slow parade along the cobbles.
July to October it genuinely rains: humid heat, afternoon storms, nights that never cool off, and Pacific hurricane season on the calendar. The river that splits the town swells, some streets turn to mud and several businesses close in September. In exchange there are fewer people, lower rates and a very green hillside.
For surfing, summer brings the south swells and the most consistent waves; winter leaves a smaller, friendlier sea that suits lessons. If you want the balance, November and early May are the rounded months: dry weather, warm water and noticeably thinner crowds than midwinter.
One practical note: weekends bring visitors from Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, and the town changes rhythm from Friday to Sunday. Arrive midweek and you sleep better, eat without queuing and usually pay a little less.
Getting there and around
The natural gateway is Puerto Vallarta airport (PVR), some 40 km away: 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter, depending on how badly Bucerías is backed up. A private taxi or transfer runs about MX$1,200-1,600 in rounded 2025 figures; shared shuttles cost considerably less if you do not mind waiting for the van to fill.
The cheap way is the bus. Services towards Compostela and Punta de Mita leave from Puerto Vallarta's northern terminal and can also be flagged on the highway opposite the airport, for something on the order of MX$60-80 and a little over an hour. They drop you on the highway, five minutes on foot from the centre.
From Guadalajara it is roughly five hours by bus to Puerto Vallarta or Compostela plus a local connection; driving the toll road takes about the same. If you do drive, consider yourself warned: parking inside the village is a real headache, there are paid lots at the entrance and many hotels have no space of their own.
Once here you need nothing but comfortable shoes: fifteen minutes covers the town, though cobbles and sand punish wheeled suitcases. Golf carts and ATVs are widely rented, noisy and unnecessary unless you are sleeping up the hill. A local bus and taxis of around MX$200-300 run to San Pancho.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre — the plaza, Avenida Revolución, Calle Delfines and Calle Marlín — puts everything at your feet: main beach, surf schools, restaurants, nightlife. It is the most convenient area and the noisiest one; in high season the bars are audible well past midnight. Ask for an interior or upper-floor room and pack earplugs.
Across the bridge over the river, the north side towards Playa Norte is the calm version of the same town: small hotels, some with a pool, five to ten minutes on foot from the plaza. This is where I would send anyone who wants to walk everywhere and still sleep properly.
Gringo Hill, the rise south of the centre, and the path towards Playa de los Muertos trade convenience for views, breeze and silence — and for steep climbs in the heat with luggage. Most of what is offered there is rental houses and apartments rather than hotels; with small children or limited mobility, think twice.
Our 2026 scans logged only 5 hotels with a real price in Sayulita, so the sample is thin and sells out fast on long weekends. If nothing works, San Pancho, 8 km north, is quieter and usually a touch cheaper, with frequent buses and taxis between the two.
Eating and going out
The food faces the sea: pescado zarandeado, shrimp and marlin tacos, ceviches and aguachiles. The stands around the plaza give the best flavour per peso — a taco runs about MX$40-60 in rounded 2025 terms — while the beachfront palapas charge mainly for the view and the chair.
Sayulita also has international kitchens, specialty coffee and menus written with foreigners in mind: a sit-down dinner with a drink easily reaches MX$350-550 a head, expensive by Mexican standards. Some places list prices in dollars, so check the exchange rate they use before handing over a card.
At night the centre holds the bars and live music, running late from December to April and turning distinctly local by September. In season there is a weekly market of growers and craftspeople; ask at your hotel which day, because it shifts from year to year.
Carry cash. Village ATMs charge stiff fees, and plenty of stalls, taxis and cart drivers take nothing else. Tipping runs 10 to 15 per cent, and it is worth checking the bill, since service is occasionally added already.

The numbers we have are blunt: 5 hotels with a real price in our 2026 scans, from US$71 a night and a typical rate of about US$119. That is dear compared with inland Mexico and ordinary for the Riviera Nayarit; with so few properties, there is little room to bargain your way down.
For Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, book months ahead and expect three- to five-night minimums plus non-refundable rates. The rainy season works the other way: rooms are available at a day's notice and prices drop noticeably, which is the one time turning up unbooked makes sense.
Before you confirm, check three things: that the air conditioning is real, because summer humidity laughs at ceiling fans; how close you are to the centre's bars; and how many steps or how much hill sits between the street and your room. Photos almost never show the climb.
A final word about the water: after heavy rain the sea near the river mouth can run dirty for a day or two. If you are travelling in summer, choose a hotel with a pool and ask about beach conditions when you check in.
