They messed up our reservations and overcharged us. The food was not great and they didnt knot bring us everything that was supposed to come with our order. The rooms were old and damp and very humid. Our ac in our first room was broken, so we asked to be switched to another room. Ac was broken in that room as well. It was hard for myself, my husband, or my kids to sleep at night because it was really hot and humid. Wh…
Attached to Gamma for 1/2 the price. Rooms could use an upgrade but nothing to really complain about... other than the ceiling in the shower being LOW enough for my to hit my head while moving.
What a great surprise to find all of the in room amenities to be of such high quality. The bedding and especially the pillows were amazing as well as the towels and the delicious morning coffee.
Planning your trip to Tampico
When to go
There is no perfect season in Tampico, only less uncomfortable ones. March and April are the pick: warm rather than punishing, little rain, and the Gulf already swimmable at Miramar. October and November work too, once the rains ease and before the cold fronts settle in properly. Those are the windows to aim for if you are here to look around rather than to work.
May to September is hot and wet — 33 to 36°C with humidity piled on top and thunderstorms most afternoons. Hurricane season runs June to November and peaks in August and September; direct hits are rare, but heavy rain and flooded streets are routine. July, August and Holy Week fill Playa Miramar with families driving down from Monterrey and San Luis Potosí.
From November to February the nortes blow in: cold fronts with wind, drizzle and days of 12-15°C that shut the beach down entirely. The city itself carries on, because heavy industry has no season, so the business hotels still fill Monday to Thursday. In winter the weather rearranges your plans here far more than it moves the room rate.
Getting there and around
General Francisco Javier Mina airport (TAM) sits about fifteen minutes from the centre and handles mostly domestic routes to Mexico City and Monterrey, with the occasional Texas connection depending on the season. A taxi into town or out to the hotel strip runs somewhere around MX$250-350; agree the fare before you get in, since meters are rare.
By road, Tampico is roughly seven hours from Monterrey, nine or ten from Mexico City, and about three from Ciudad Valles, the gateway to the Huasteca Potosina. First-class buses use one central terminal and the service is reliable. The rule nobody bends in Tamaulipas: travel in daylight, stick to toll roads, and do not drive between cities after dark.
Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira run together as a single sprawl, but the distances are real — reckon 20 to 30 minutes from the old centre out to Playa Miramar depending on traffic. City buses cost on the order of MX$15, ride apps work well and usually undercut street taxis, and a rental car only earns its keep if you are splitting days between beach, centre and port.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro Histórico is the part worth walking: the Plaza de Armas with its cathedral and, a block away, the Plaza de la Libertad, ringed by late-19th-century buildings with cast-iron balconies that gave Tampico its faintly New Orleans reputation. This is where the older, plainer hotels are, and where the US$50 floor from our scans generally comes from.
Midweek the centre empties after dark and the action shifts north to the Avenida Hidalgo corridor, home to the business-oriented chains, the shopping centres and a good share of the restaurants. It is the easiest base if you arrive by car or are here to work, and it is where our sample's typical figure of around US$99 actually lives.
Ciudad Madero and Playa Miramar are the seaside option: kilometres of sand, a promenade, and hotels and condo blocks facing the water. It works in summer and over long weekends, when prices climb accordingly; midweek in winter it can feel deserted. Check on a map whether the hotel really fronts the beach or sits several streets back — the difference matters here.
Altamira, further north, is port and industry, full stop: people sleep there for work and no other reason. If you like walking, the Colonia Petrolera, with its 1920s and 1930s houses built for oil company staff, and the Laguna del Carpintero, with its park and resident crocodiles, are the two urban outings that genuinely surprise visitors.
Eating and going out
The food here comes out of the water. Crab is king — stuffed, shredded into salpicón, packed into sandwiches — and shrimp from the Pánuco and the lagoons turns up in almost everything. A serious seafood plate runs somewhere around MX$250-400, while a set lunch downtown lands between MX$120 and MX$180. The central markets do the city's best breakfast and close early.
The torta de la barda is the local institution: a wide flat roll layered with beans, cheese, avocado, ham, breaded steak and more, sold from before dawn near the port wall it is named after. It costs little and replaces a whole meal. Carne a la tampiqueña, by contrast, was invented in Mexico City by a Tampico restaurateur — you can eat it here, minus the mythology.
Nightlife clusters along Avenida Hidalgo and the streets around it, where bars and terraces fill from Thursday to Saturday. In summer the Miramar promenade takes over, with palapas and music running late. This is a city that eats dinner late and warm; over long weekends and school holidays, when regional visitors arrive, book a table in advance.

This is not a boutique market or a bargain-hunting one; it is a corporate market, which explains why the middle of the range sits higher than you would expect in a city without mass tourism.
The useful pattern is the reverse of a beach town's. Midweek demand is work-driven and the better hotels fill Monday to Thursday, while Friday and Saturday tend to open up gaps and softer rates. At Miramar it flips: weekends, summer and Holy Week are the busy, expensive stretches, and quiet midweek winter is when you name your price.
Before you pay, confirm three things: air conditioning that genuinely works, because from May to September it is not optional; parking if you are driving; and the real distance to wherever you plan to spend your days — the centre to the beach is a solid half hour in traffic. Travelling in hurricane season, take the cancellable rate.
