About staying in Tapalpa
Tapalpa is a pine-forest town at around 2,000 metres, two and a half hours south of Guadalajara. The village is a handful of cobbled streets around the jardín principal, with the parish church of San Antonio de Padua and the roofless shell of the unfinished temple beside it; everything else is cabins scattered through the woods, out towards Las Piedrotas and the Ferrería de Tula ruins. Our 2026 scans found only 3 hotels with a real price here — most beds are cabins and small guesthouses — from US$55 a night, with a typical rate of about US$112. Where should I stay in Tapalpa?
In the centre, a few blocks from the jardín principal, if you want to walk to dinner and forget the car: that is where the old tile-roofed houses turned hotels are, next to the arcades. Out in the forest, on the tracks to Las Piedrotas or Chiquilistlán, you sleep among pines with a fireplace, but you drive for everything, breakfast included.
When is it cheapest?
Midweek. Tapalpa lives off the Guadalajara weekend: Sunday to Thursday rates drop and you can turn up without booking; Friday and Saturday it fills and prices climb. The peaks are Holy Week, long weekends, the June fiestas and the year-end holidays. Our 2026 scans logged rooms from US$55 and a typical rate of about US$112, from a small sample of just 3 hotels.
How do I get there and get around?
From Guadalajara it is about 125 km on federal highway 54 towards Colima, then a winding climb into the sierra: two and a half hours, with fog rolling in most evenings. Buses leave from the Antigua Central Camionera, roughly three hours and on the order of MX$250. The town is walkable; Las Piedrotas and El Salto del Nogal need a taxi, a quad bike or a tour.
Is it really that cold?
Colder than anyone arriving from Guadalajara expects. At 2,000 metres, December to February nights drop to five degrees or less, with frost before dawn. Almost nothing here has central heating: the norm is a fireplace, heavy blankets and a gas water heater. Ask before booking whether firewood is included and whether hot water runs all day.
