Parking right next to the room, located in one of the small buildings along the resort road, was also very convenient. Check-in and check-out were quick, and the young woman at reception was friendly and provided useful information. Beautiful place, in a great setting. A few minutes from the town “pueblo mágico Tapalpa” you do need a car… it has a restaurant and a lot of activities nearby
The Rooms are nice and cozy, beds are great in general cabin was ok, rooms seems to require a bit of maintenance. The buffet at the restaurant was pretty tasty.
Planning your trip to Tapalpa
When to go
The best window is October to December: clear skies after the rains, the forest still green and days of 22-25°C. March to May is dry and mild too, dustier and browner by the afternoon. These are the months when the sierra looks like the photographs — and the busiest weekends of the year.
June to September it rains almost daily, usually after lunch: fog, muddy dirt tracks and waterfalls at their best. It works fine if you go out early, but save El Salto del Nogal for a day when it did not pour the night before.
Winter is genuinely cold by Mexican standards: mornings near zero, frost on the roofs, the fireplace lit all day. December and January also bring long weekends, the year-end break and carloads from Guadalajara — the worst mix of high prices and full streets.
Dates to skip if you want quiet: Holy Week, long weekends, the San Antonio de Padua fiestas in mid-June and the last week of December. Come midweek in any season and you get a different town: silent, with maybe half the restaurants open.
Getting there and around
The airport that matters is Guadalajara, about two and a half hours away. Driving, take federal 54 towards Colima and climb via the Atemajac de Brizuela turn-off or via Amacueca; the last 30 km are all curves. Drive in daylight — fog, loose cattle and very little street lighting.
Buses run frequently from Guadalajara's Antigua Central Camionera, not the newer terminal. Count on three hours with stops and on the order of MX$250. Tapalpa's bus station sits a few blocks from the plaza, but uphill: with heavy luggage, take a local taxi for MX$40-50.
You can cross the centre on foot in twenty minutes, though the streets are stone and steep; wheeled suitcases and tired knees both suffer. Taxis are few and thin out after dark, so get a number from your hotel before heading out to dinner somewhere far.
Las Piedrotas lie about 4 km away on a dirt road: an hour's walk, or a quad bike or taxi that waits. El Salto del Nogal is further and the final stretch is rough track; with a low car, hire transport or a guide. In the rainy season, ask about road conditions first.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Around the jardín principal and the lanes running down to the arcades is the practical choice: adobe-and-tile houses converted into hotels, patios, fireplaces, and dinner a two-minute walk away. It is also where Saturday noise lands — music on the square, quad bikes, late groups. Ask for a room off the street.
Three or four blocks uphill, on the cobbled slopes above the church, the town goes quiet quickly: the same walkable distances, valley views and silence, in exchange for climbing home after dinner. It is the best balance between calm and not needing a car.
Outside town, along the roads to Chiquilistlán, Las Piedrotas and the Ferrería de Tula, you find the cabins: pines, a terrace, a grill and nothing else nearby. They do not work without a car, and those roads are unlit at night. Good for groups and families, poor value for a solo night.

Eating and going out
The local dish is borrego al pastor, lamb cooked in an earth oven and served with broth and hand-made tortillas; it is mostly a lunchtime, weekend thing. The sierra trout farms supply the other staple, and the arcades sell tamales and sweet bread from early morning.
To drink, ponche de granada — warm, sweet, pomegranate — is the standing habit on cold evenings, alongside rompope and café de olla from the stalls on the square. On the plaza, budget on the order of MX$150-250 for a main course; a midweek set lunch costs considerably less.
Nightlife is short. A couple of bars and cafés around the square, most shut before midnight, and far quieter Sunday to Thursday. Arrive on a Tuesday in low season and you should check hours: several places open only for lunch or close for the day entirely.
Booking well
For Friday and Saturday, book weeks ahead — months ahead for Holy Week, long weekends or New Year, when many places impose a two-night minimum. Midweek the logic flips: there is space, there is room to negotiate, and the town belongs to whoever showed up.
Before you pay, ask three things: whether the room has a fireplace and whether firewood is included, whether hot water runs all day, and whether parking is part of the rate. In December and January those answers matter more than the view.
Watch the location on listings. Plenty of cabins say Tapalpa and sit 8 to 15 km out along dirt roads. Ask for exact coordinates and picture the drive back after dark before committing, especially if you are relying on taxis.
