Comfortable beds and bedding. Overall a bit too sterile and lacking any adornment or even normal hotel curtains. Bathroom was too dark to shave and shower hot water was scalding hot. Be careful. No elevators for second or third floors--so request ground floor by phone prior to checkin.
Suburban hotel. Classic, clean, friendly. Everyone was simply superb, from check-in, to Secueity (Thank you again Eric for your help with my bike), help on my bike to Juan Carlos the GM who was constantly meeting and helping guests throughout the hotel, to Pauliano (?) serving breakfast (buffet was good value), and to Veronica, lovely and professional at Reception. I've been travelling for the past 6 months and this is probably the best-run hotel I've come across. Gracias a todos! ***Make sure your directions are set out beforehand as the hotel is very easy to miss!
Planning your trip to Tepic
When to go
The dry season runs November to May: days of 25 to 30°C, cool mornings and January nights that can drop to ten. It's the best weather for walking the Centro and for day trips to the Santa María del Oro lake or down to San Blas without mud.
June to October it rains properly. Tepic is among the wettest state capitals in Mexico: afternoon storms, heavy and fairly punctual. In exchange the hills turn green and the Sangangüey volcano stands clear at dawn. Bring a rain layer and shoes that cope with wet streets.
May and early June are the hottest stretch, before the rains break. Occupancy peaks over Holy Week, in early May around the Cruz de Zacate festivities, and at year-end. With only eight hotels in our scans, those dates disappear quickly.
Getting there and around
Amado Nervo airport lies some fifteen kilometres out towards Xalisco and handles only a handful of domestic routes. Most visitors land in Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta and continue by road. A taxi from the airport into the centre runs around 300 pesos; agree the fare before getting in.
Overland, Guadalajara is about three hours on the toll road, Puerto Vallarta another three, Mazatlán four to five. The bus station sits on the eastern side of town, well away from the centre: budget 80 to 120 pesos for a taxi with luggage.
The Centro is walkable and city buses run north along Avenida México. Beyond that, distances stretch and pavements thin out. Renting a car only pays off if you plan to reach the coast, the lake or the Ceboruco volcano.
One fair warning: avoid driving the mountain roads and the free routes to the coast after dark. Daytime is fine, but signage is poor and the rainy season brings potholes and the occasional landslide.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Centro Histórico. Around the Plaza Principal and the first blocks of Avenida México you sleep steps from the cathedral, the Museo Regional, the Amado Nervo house museum and the market. Hotels are modest, some in older buildings; ask for an inside room, because traffic starts early.
Avenida México north and Avenida Insurgentes. This is where most chain and business hotels sit: parking, air conditioning, breakfast included, fast access to the highway. Charmless, and far enough that you'll taxi most evenings, but it is the practical choice for a work trip.
Xalisco road and airport side. Worth it only for dawn flights or for travellers passing through towards Vallarta. You sleep comfortably, eat wherever you can and leave early; there is no street life to speak of.

Eating and going out
An hour inland, Tepic still eats like the coast. Zarandeado fish, shrimp tostadas and the local ceviche — finely chopped, heavy on lime — are the midday standard. The good seafood places tend to close early; this is lunchtime food, not dinner.
The Juan Escutia market is the honest breakfast stop: birria, weekend menudo, tacos and tejuino to wash it down. Around the Centro there are quiet cafés and bakeries, with no tourist pricing and set lunches in the 100 to 150 peso range.
Nights are low-key. Midweek the Centro shuts down early and whatever is happening moves north, along Avenida México and near the shopping plazas, where you'll find bars and neighbourhood cantinas. Fridays and Saturdays are livelier, but nobody comes to Tepic for nightlife.
Booking well
With eight hotels in our scans, booking early matters more than comparing. Over Holy Week, long weekends and the year-end fortnight the city fills with people heading to or from the coast, and what little remains gets expensive. Think weeks ahead, not days.
Because so much of the trade is corporate, occupancy leans Monday to Thursday. If your dates are flexible, an ordinary weekend usually costs less. The figures from our scans — from US$54, typical of the order of US$86 — shift with the calendar far more than with neighbourhood.
Before confirming, check three things: covered parking if you're driving, air conditioning that actually works for May and June, and the real distance to the Centro, since several hotels advertised as central are a ten-minute taxi away.
If the beach is the real plan, price up San Blas or the Riviera Nayarit first. Tepic repays one or two nights for its museums, its Wixárika craftwork and its position at the crossroads; stretching the stay rarely pays.
