About staying in Tequila
Tequila is a day trip for most visitors and a better trip for the few who stay the night. The tour buses and the weekend train from Guadalajara clear out by evening, and the plaza in front of the Santiago Apóstol parish church goes back to belonging to the town. Almost everything worth your time fits into eight or ten blocks: the historic distilleries, the Museo Nacional del Tequila, the terraces along Calle José Cuervo. Beds are the constraint. Our 2026 scans found only 4 hotels with a real price, from US$67 a night and a typical rate of around US$171.

Which part of town should I stay in?
The centre, if you want to walk to the distilleries and the plaza — this is a small town and most of it sits within a few blocks. Three or four streets back from the square you are just as close and sleep far better. The haciendas out among the agave fields are quiet and handsome, but without a car you depend on taxis.
When are rooms cheapest?
Midweek, every time. Tequila runs on weekend excursions from Guadalajara, so Sunday to Thursday brings both availability and better rates. Avoid the Feria Nacional del Tequila, which straddles late November and early December, plus Holy Week and Mexican long weekends: with only four hotels carrying a real price in our 2026 scans — from US$67, typically around US$171 — supply disappears fast.
How do I get there and get around?
From Guadalajara, buses leave the Antigua Central Camionera regularly: a slow ninety minutes with stops, on the order of MX$150-200. Driving takes just over an hour on Highway 15 with the toll road. Guadalajara's airport sits on the far side of the city, so allow close to two hours. In town everything is walkable and short taxi hops run about MX$50-80.
Is staying overnight better than a day trip?
If you plan to taste, yes — nobody has to drive the highway back. The town also changes once the coaches leave, the early-morning distillery tours are half empty, and you get a free morning for the Volcán de Tequila or the Los Azules waterfalls. If you only want one distillery and a good lunch, a full day does the job.
