Final day here, rooms are great, room service was great, food is great. Basically everything here was great. They change up the buffet breakfast each day, they have musicians playing some days and the waiters are top notch. Carlos did an excellent job taking care of our group, he was always ready with a smile and always very professional.
Planning your trip to Toluca
When to go
November to February gives you the clearest skies of the year: dry sun, afternoons around 20°C, volcanoes cut sharp on the horizon. The cost is the cold — nights at or below zero, frost on windscreens. It is also when the Nevado wakes up white, and when you should ask twice about the heating.
March through May are the mild months: 24-26°C by day, afternoon wind, and the best window for the crater without ice. In exchange the valley turns dry and dusty, and April's agricultural burning hazes the air. Downtown is walkable without a heavy coat.
June to September it rains most afternoons, sometimes with hail, and the highway to Mexico City becomes a punishment. Mornings usually break bright, so an early start still buys you a full day. The Nevado, though, spends more days wrapped in cloud than in view.
Prices here move by day of the week, not by season: Monday to Thursday belongs to executives and conferences; Friday to Sunday the rates loosen. The calendar exception is the Feria del Alfeñique, from late October to 2 November, when sugar-skull stalls fill the old centre.
Getting there and around
The airport is small and easy: 15-25 minutes to Metepec or the centre, and a taxi in the order of MX$200-350 at 2025 prices, with an authorised rank at the door and ride-hailing that works. It mostly handles low-cost flights, and as Mexico City's alternate it saves you the crossing of the valley.
From Mexico City, buses leave Observatorio and Santa Fe every few minutes: 1-1.5 hours for roughly MX$100-150, except Friday afternoon, when the motorway seizes up. The El Insurgente train skips the traffic altogether, but its western terminus sits in Zinacantepec — budget for the last leg to your hotel.
The old centre walks end to end: the Cosmovitral, the arcades and the Plaza de los Mártires are fifteen minutes apart at most. Beyond that Toluca is wide and spread out — Metepec is 20 minutes and something like MX$100-150 by taxi. City buses are cheap and useful once you know the routes.
For the Nevado, Valle de Bravo, Malinalco or Teotenango you need a car or a tour. The crater road climbs off the Sultepec highway and the final dirt stretch punishes low cars; leave early, carry water and walk slowly, because you are above 4,000 metres.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Metepec is the short answer for most people: a municipality with its own life, a pueblo mágico of potters with its Calvario hill and parish church, real restaurants, and the newest hotels in the valley, priced around the typical rate we logged, in the order of US$75. Twenty minutes to central Toluca, twenty to the airport.
The airport and industrial corridor — San Pedro Totoltepec, the Toluca 2000 zone, Lerma — holds the executive hotels: parking, breakfast included, a desk, dawn transfers. Midweek they live off industry; at weekends they empty and drop their rates. The trade-off is obvious: nowhere to walk to at night.
The Centro keeps the cheapest rooms — from the US$50 a night we saw in our 2026 scans — in plain hotels around the arcades, the cathedral and the Cosmovitral. You gain museums, market and breakfast on foot; you lose quiet, because the central avenues are loud, and many old buildings have never met a radiator.
By profile: early flight or factory visit, the airport corridor; couples and families who want a pleasant town, Metepec; tight budget and a museum plan, the Centro. And the check that matters more here than a pool does on the coast: heating, enough blankets, and hot water with pressure at six in the morning.
Eating and going out
Green chorizo — coriander, chilli, almond — is Toluca's signature, and its natural form is a torta under the arcades, in the order of MX$50-90 at 2025 prices. The red version, sweeter, works the same way. A market breakfast of broth or tacos de plaza runs MX$70-130 and kills the cold outright.
Weekends belong to lamb barbacoa and its consommé; midweek, downtown loncherías serve set lunches for roughly MX$100-150. For afterwards, the market's crystallised fruit sweets and moscos, the local orange liqueur sold around the old centre and not easily forgotten.
Nightlife means Metepec: the pueblo's centre and its restaurant avenues hold the bars, with a student crowd. Central Toluca shuts early and the streets empty — nothing dramatic, but come back by app or authorised taxi, and go out in a proper coat.
One altitude note: at 2,660 metres two drinks land like three, and you will feel it next morning if the Nevado is on the plan. Drink water, eat early, and save the long night for the end of the trip, once you have acclimatised.

Ask what you would never ask elsewhere: whether the heating is built in or a plug-in unit, how many blankets the bed carries, whether hot water arrives with pressure early, and whether the window faces Paseo Tollocan. Minor details on the coast, decisive here in January.
Two dates to watch: the Alfeñique fair saturates the old centre in late October, and Mexican long weekends push demand into Metepec and Valle de Bravo. Snow on the Nevado, by contrast, fills the road and the park's car park long before the hotels — the problem those days is arriving, not sleeping.
